Interesting Content and Convenient Size

Although this is a small book, it really packs in a lot of information, and the size makes it very convenient to carry around. The information that the book provides is presented in a way that is interesting and easy to understand. Although I was required to get this book for a class (it's definitely one of my favorite textbooks), it is something which I could also consider reading for fun. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ethnomusicology, world music, or just wants to know more about humans and music in general.

I have been a student of ethnomusicology since the early 1970s, and have witnessed major paradigm shifts over the four decades I have been involved in the discipline. Tim Rice does a wonderful job of presenting a whirlwind tour of a complex and protean field. He reminds us of the sense of social responsibility that pervades our every effort. I am seriously thinking of having it as required reading for music majors.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was an English writer. His prolific and diverse output included philosophy, ontology, poetry, play writing, journalism, public lecturing and debating, biography, Christian apologetics, fantasy and detective fiction.
Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox".[1] Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."[2] For example, Chesterton wrote the following:

If you don't know "The Thing," then you don't really get Chesterton.

Anyone who attempts to become a "Chestertonian," without understanding his intimate relationship with "The Thing," will be in a similar position to an equestrian "expert" who has never actually ridden a horse. One cannot truly know Chesterton, truly appreciate the man behind the prose, poetry, plays, and other writings apart from "The Thing." While it is difficult, if indeed at all possible, to select one particular work as Chesterton's best, or as the most foundational, I will classify "The Thing" as indispensable to a serious study of Chesterton.

night time reading...

highly recommended to fans of "the Thing" gave a lot of creedence to the movie and as character names were the same as movie (Copper , MacReady) it was rather enjoyable and easy to picture in one's "minds eye" what was happening , although there were very subtle differences which made it a little different , but not to the point of annoyance.

Good overview of solar cell technology in the area I am very familiar with (III-V solar cells) as well as useful accounts by those I know to be experts in silicon cells (M.A. Green), ideal efficiency (P.T. Landsberg), etc. in a reasonable size (will not break your wrist if you hold it in one hand). I believe it is good place to start to learn about a new area, but for details one would want to consult the current literature.

Buyer beware

The publisher's claim on the back jacket that this has been revised does not stand up to scrutiny. Only a few chapters have been updated. All of the thin film sections are a decade or more out of date. Many to most of the formulas have errors. The scope of the book's coverage looked attractive enough. It's hard to keep up with the fast moving PV developments, but this was a poor try by the publisher to reissue the 1st edition with one or two cosmetic changes and no proofreading.

This controversial book by Ivan Van Sertima, the Guyanese historian, linguist, and anthropologist, claims that Africans had been to the New World centuries before Columbus arrived there in 1492. Soapmaking 101 by Kerri Mixon

As a brand new "soaper" this book was informative, with easy to follow instructions, & very well written. I have tried the recipes with great success & even mixed up a few recipes of my own using her great formula guide. I highly recommend this book to all "soapers" new & experienced. Kerri has inspired me to start my own little business with her easy teaching style & great rapport with her students. Great book!

Very Informative

I thought this guide was very informative and well written using straightforward language. In addition to detailed safety information, it also includes a guide on average saponification values which is helpful if you are using oils purchased from retailers that do not provide specification sheets.

What I found most helpful in the book are worksheets that help break down the nuts and bolts of what goes into cold process soap making. The worksheets guide you through the process of putting together soap 'recipes' so that you can eventually come up with your own recipes rather than just following someone elses. There was a lot more math and chemistry involved in soap making than I realized, neither of which is my forte, but with the worksheets and the information in the book, I was able to figure things out without too much trouble.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about the process of cold process soap making.

Not recommended - Should only be sold to class students.

Not impressed with this book. It looks like it would compliment one of the author's classes, but it is almost worthless to a beginner soapmaker trying to learn on their own. There are loads of beginner books for soapmaking, which provide more thorough information for beginners. This book is very thin and contains little instruction. A chunk of the book are blank note pages. About 1/3 of the book lists vendors and a glossary. The bulk of the book with any content (about 1/2 the pages) focuses heavily on lye and looking at MSDS pages from suppliers. While lye safety is important, spending a full page out of 29 content pages just on safety goggles is a bit of a waste. The couple of pages that provide any instructions are very light with short steps and no explanation. I believe the author should only sell this book to students in her class. The price seems a bit high for the content.

About the Author
J.J. PRITCHARD, born in Seattle, Washington, first became intrigued by Oak Island when he was a young boy and read a news story about the Money Pit. His interest flourished as more accounts about the exploration of the island were available in print and shown on television. He has an undergraduate degree in Cinematography from the University of Southern California and a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Long Beach. He has worked in the investments field for more than 20 years. In 1993, Pritchard established the Helmets For Youth Foundation which provides bicycle safety helmets to low income children in Washington State, after he was in a near-fatal bicycle accident. Over 10,000 helmets have been distributed, free of charge. In 2000, he received a national Lifesaver Award, from the U.S. Department of Transporation as recognirion for his efforts in transportation related injury prevention.

He lives on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, with his wife, two kids and three cats. He is the author of Quest for the Pillars of Wealth for young readers. The Secret Treasures of Oak Island is his first adventure novel.

My 8 year old son got this book from the library and loved it. He found it very interesting and liked that it is based on a real location and the mysterious mythology that surrounds it. He also enjoyed the ending, which was different than the way many children's books finish. Highly recommended.

It keeps you wondering what's next!

After my children whizzed through the book they encourage me to read it, I was sure glad it did. I couldn't put the book down. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen the story took a surprising turn. After reading the book was a good opportunity to my children go to the library and do a little research about the actual money pit. Now my kids are really excited to read the other book by JJ Pritchard, "Quest for the Pillars of Wealth (A Children's Guide to Growing Rich)." "Secret Treasures of Oak Island" come HIGHLY recommended!

Fun Book to Read

When I got this book, I couldn't wait read it, I stayed up all night, and it was worth it! The book talks about the treasure of Oak Island not just the history but also a story about two kids who are trying to find the treasure. It's great for historians, people who love adventure, and people who just love a good story!So overall the storyline is enjoyable, and Mr. Pritchard should definately try his hand at some more children's books.

About the Author

Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN, is an award-winning registered dietitian with a nutrition counseling practice in Newport Beach, CA, specializing in eating disorders. She also trains health professionals on how to help their clients cultivate a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body through the process of Intuitive Eating, a concept she co-pioneered. Tribole is author of several books, including Healthy Homestyle Cooking, and is coauthor of Intuitive Eating. She was the nutrition expert for Good Morning America, and was a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for six years. She served three years on the Social Media committee of the Academy for Eating Disorders. Tribole is often sought after by the media for her nutritional expertise, and has appeared in hundreds of interviews, including CNN, NBC’s Today Show, MSNBC, Fox News, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and People magazine. She also gives presentations around the world on intuitive eating.

Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, is a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills, CA, with over thirty-five years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, intuitive eating, and health at every size. She is coauthor of Intuitive Eating, has published journal articles, and does regular speaking engagements and extensive media interviews. Her work has been profiled on CNN, KABC, NBC, AP Press KFI Radio, USA Today, and KTTV television, among others. Resch is nationally known for her work in helping patients break free from the diet mentality through the intuitive eating process. Her philosophy embraces the goal of reconnecting with your internal wisdom about eating. She supervises and trains health professionals, is a certified eating disorder registered dietitian, fellow of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Foreword writer Tracy Tylka, PhD, is professor of psychology at the Columbus and Marion campuses of The Ohio State University. She attended the University of Akron for her undergraduate and graduate studies, earning her BA in psychology in 1995, MA in counseling psychology in 1998, and PhD in counseling psychology in 2001. Tylka completed her predoctoral internship at the counseling center at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She joined the department of psychology at The Ohio State University as an assistant professor in 2001, received tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2007, and was promoted to full professor in 2013.
