memories of the past

A few months ago, I was visiting a friend in Ferrara and while walking through the streets of the town I was reminded of the Finzi Continis' sad story.
Going by the wall surrounding the house where they used to live, I went back to the times of their youth(the 30s and 40s)and I could nearly hear their happy voices, Alberto, Micol and their friends playing tennis in the big garden, Alberto on his wheeling chair watching the others play.
Ghosts of a time past, happy young people unware of what was waiting for them just round one of the corners of their lives.
I read the the book a few years ago and I was impressed by the sad, but never tragic style of the author Giorgio Bassani.
The story is a recollection of the life of a Jewish family from Ferrara before and during the Nazi-fascist persecutions of world war two.
The story of the one-sided love of the author for Micol Finzi Contini the Jewish girl who seems to foresee her destiny and refuses to return his love. She seems to know about her deportation to a concentration camp somewhere in Germany where would be lost any trace of her and her family.
She is doomed and she knows it.
Mr. Bassani tells his children this story while visiting an Etruscan necropolis, it is his story too and sadly points out that there are no tombs where to grieve and pray for Micol and her family, there is only their memory left in the hearts of those who loved them

About the Author
Mary E. Daly is Professor Emeritus in Modern Irish History at University College Dublin. In 2014 she was elected as the first woman President of the Royal Irish Academy in the Academy's 229-year history. In addition to a career as a teacher and researcher in modern Irish history, spanning more than forty years, she has been Principal of the College of Arts and Celtic Studies at UCD. She is a member of the Irish government's Expert Advisory Group on Commemorations, and in 2015 was appointed as a Commissioner to investigate the history of Ireland's mother and baby homes.

About the Author
Michael Browning was running Melbourne's Hard Rock Cafe when he first encountered a struggling AC/DC in 1974. When he and the band parted ways five years later, they were on the brink of global domination. Prior to that, Michael managed such local stars as Billy Thorpe and Doug Parkinson.�After a stint in the USA in the early 1980s, Michael returned to Australia, where he launched Deluxe Records, in the process discovering and developing INXS, whom he signed to the label.

Many moons ago during my high school years overseas, this was THE required chemistry text. Now that I need to reboot my memory so to speak before enrolling in college chemistry next semester, I could think of no other resource to bring me back up to speed. It's a solid text that has been in use for over fifty years. If you need access to solid chemistry teaching, built on simple but pertinent facts ,this is your book. It is not one of the current "process-driven" books, but a good old fashioned "meat-and-potatoes" resource ,thorough, unambiguous, and orderly. Just follow along and use the loaded questions section, but you would do well to check up-to-date sources for hazard standards and classifications for the practicals. This book would be the perfect gift for your budding scientist and should be in every scientist's resource library.

THE school Chemistry text.

Arnold Holderness taught me chemistry, at Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School in the 50's. He used the forerunner of this text, as did most other high schools in England at that time. He was a superb teacher who knew his subject, and his writing showed it. I appreciate him now far more than I ever did. i still have his old text.
