EVERYBODY WINS is a great, quick reference guide

Do you ever find yourself arguing with your spouse? Going around and around about an issue with little resolve? If so, then Gary Chapman, the director of Marriage and Family Life Consultants and bestselling author of THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES, says you're not alone. In fact, every couple has disagreements. In marriage, conflict is inevitable. But arguing is a choice.

In this short, focused title, Chapman explores what's so bad about arguing and why it's important to resolve conflicts of every size. He challenges readers to identify their most painful arguments as well as which three issues have consumed the most time and energy over the past year. Chapman believes that no matter what arguments you are having with your spouse, it's essential to look for resolution. He argues that conflicts within a relationship arise out of our uniqueness.

Chapman believes that the answer to conflict resolution is not in trying to rid ourselves of our differences but in discovering how to make our differences into assets rather than liabilities. The goal of a good, healthy marriage is learning to work together as a team and discovering resolution that pulls the couple together rather than apart.

Drawing examples from his own interactions with couples as a counselor, the book offers a variety of stories that most married people can relate to. For instance, Chapman describes Iris and Jerry, a couple who decided to repaint their house. They agreed on every color until it came to painting the bathroom. That's where the argument began: Iris wanted green while Jerry preferred blue. As each spouse makes their case why their color is the best, Chapman surmises that both parties are still in arguing mode and haven't moved to resolution mode. He encourages each spouse to verbally affirm the other's ideas. In the process, each spouse softens, and in the end, they decide to paint the bathroom green and blue.

Such resolution may seem elementary unless, of course, you're the one in the situation. That's when reflecting an attitude of respect and togetherness is the most important. Chapman believes that one of the crucial aspects of resolving any argument is taking the time to listen, which opens up the door to understanding. He points out that the issue you're arguing about may not be the issue at all --- there may be charged statements or beliefs that run deeper or have more invested than you may realize. That's why asking questions and taking the time to listen is so powerful.

Each chapter closes with a section on "Putting the Principles into Practice," which offers a handful of questions for reflection. At the end of the book is "A Resolution By Which Everybody Wins," a one-page contract for spouses to sign as they seek to improve their communication and resolution skills.

The book's greatest strength --- it's brevity --- is also its greatest weakness, at times leaving the reader looking for more depth. But overall, EVERYBODY WINS is a great, quick reference guide.

Deepen the relationship or justify your actions?

The magic of this short audio book is that it brings your intention to respect and love your partner into conflict resolution. Dr. Chapman reminds you of ideal love you want to have and then shows you how to get back on the track that will take you there. All couples have disagreements and misunderstandings. The couples that work through all conflicts gain tremendous insight and appreciation into each other while avoiding built up hidden resentment.

The concepts of empathetic listening and compromise are not new. The real value in this product is the change that will occur in you through the process of learning what is important in relationships. You will feel the changes in your mindset right away.

My only critique is the audio book left me wanting to know more pitfalls and solutions.

Straight to the point

I decided to get the audio version because I could listen to it in my car. I like the fact that he gets straight to the point. Explaining the specifics of a conversation and why the way people look at conversations don't work and seems to lead to arguing a lot of the time. The book is just two CD's long, so as I said above, he gets to the point right away. There are really good exercises in there to use and he uses real world examples that make sense.

For starters I would definitely suggest this book to anyone that has conflict in their lives.

Multinational firms can artificially shift profits from high-tax to low-tax jurisdictions using a variety of techniques, such as shifting debt to high-tax jurisdictions. Since tax on the income of foreign subsidiaries (except for certain passive income) is deferred until repatriated, this income can avoid current U.S. taxes and perhaps do so indefinitely. The taxation of passive income (called Subpart F income) has been reduced, perhaps significantly, through the use of “hybrid entities” that are treated differently in different jurisdictions. The use of hybrid entities was greatly expanded by a new regulation (termed “check-the-box”) introduced in the late 1990s that had unintended consequences for foreign firms. In addition, earnings from income that is taxed can often be shielded by foreign tax credits on other income. On average very little tax is paid on the foreign source income of U.S. firms. Ample evidence of a significant amount of profit shifting exists, but the revenue cost estimates vary from about $10 billion to $60 billion per year. Individuals can evade taxes on passive income, such as interest, dividends, and capital gains, by not reporting income earned abroad. In addition, since interest paid to foreign recipients is not taxed, individuals can also evade taxes on U.S. source income by setting up shell corporations and trusts in foreign haven countries to channel funds. There is no general third party reporting of income as is the case for ordinary passive income earned domestically; the IRS relies on qualified intermediaries (QIs) who certify nationality without revealing the beneficial owners. Estimates of the cost of individual evasion have ranged from $40 billion to $70 billion. Most provisions to address profit shifting by multinational firms would involve changing the tax law: repealing or limiting deferral, limiting the ability of the foreign tax credit to offset income, addressing check-the-box, or even formula apportionment. President Obama’s proposals include a proposal to disallow overall deductions and foreign tax credits for deferred income and restrictions on the use of hybrid entities. About the Author
Jo Anne Vasquez, Ph.D. is Vice President and Program Director of Arizona Transition Years' Teacher and Curriculum STEM Initiatives at the Helios Education Foundation. Jo Anne has been a classroom teacher, district science specialist for Mesa Public Schools, adjunct professor of science education at Arizona State University, and director of professional development and outreach for ASU's Center for Research on Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (CRESMET). A recognized leader in science education, Jo Anne is a Past President of NSTA (National Science Teachers Association), and the National Science Education Leadership Association. She was a Presidential Appointee to the National Science Board, as well as the first and only K-12 educator elected to the governing board of the National Science Foundation. Her distinguished service and extraordinary contributions to the advancement of science education at the local, state and national levels has won her numerous awards including NSTA's highest award, the 2006 Robert H. Carlton Award for Leadership in Science Education. She has been named Arizona's Outstanding Educator of the Year and the National Environmental Association's Teacher of the Year.

Michael Comer's dedication to teaching was fostered by his early experiences at Assumption School in Peekskill NY. He carried that passion into his own professional career teaching middle school science. His work with classroom educators providing hands-on training and professional development workshops led to an invitation to work with the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia on improving their science instruction. Michael is coauthor (with Jo Anne) of Developing Visual Literacy in Science K-8 (NSTA Press). Currently he is the National Marketing Manager for STEM at McGraw-Hill and is the proud father to Brett, Toby and Elyse (who also share his passion for learning).

Dr. Cary Sneider is Associate Research Professor at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. He also consults on diverse issues in STEM education, such as youth programs at science centers, educational standards, and assessment. Cary was a contributing writer of A Framework for K-12 Science Education (National Research Council 2012), which laid the groundwork for new science standards, and is currently a member of the writing team that is implementing the Framework under the title Next Generation Science Standards. In 2011 he joined the National Assessment Governing Board, which sets policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as "The Nation's Report Card." Until 2007, Cary served as Vice President for Educator Programs at the Museum of Science in Boston, and prior to that he served as Director of Astronomy and Physics Education at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California. He has been a recipient of the Distinguished Informal Science Education award from NSTA and in 2003 was named National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences.

OK, but not that great...

I bought this book when our school became a STEM school. It contains some decent information about STEM, but no practical way to implement STEM lessons in your classroom or how to adapt existing lessons to a STEM focus. Very disappointed in the purchase, did not contain any information that I was really looking for in regards to STEM. Save your money and go to the Internet blogs--they have a lot more practical information about STEM!

My favorite part of the book is when the authors list the five guiding principles for effective STEM instruction and sample activities. This book is a resource identifying the characteristics of STEM, it is not a how to book full of STEM activities to use. The authors make you think and analyze your own practice causing you to become STEM practitioners.

Adding to your STEM repertoire

If you already know what the STEM acronym means and you want to add depth to your knowledge and understanding, STEM Lesson Essentials is a good book for you. It is an easy read, which is great for the busy teacher with limited time, so you'll be able to use what you learn quickly. Chapters are short and focused, with vignettes of STEM integration in action and reflection questions that can be used in a Professional Learning Community. I've used this book as part of an online PLC dedicated to Integration of Math and Science in K-8, and participants found the chapter on STEM assessment particularly helpful. This is a well-written, useful resource book for pre-service and classroom teachers.
