A good social psychology of why we behave with compassion

During the highly publicized sentencing of Susan Smith, the Spartanburg, SC woman convicted of murdering her two young sons, the Herald-Journal reported, "The defense, which has maintained Smith is a tormented woman who has suffered a history of mental problems and abuse, is expected to capitalize on the officers' sympathy for Smith when she confessed. If they could show compassion, defense lawyers hope the jury will believe that Smith does not deserve to die." Meanwhile, the paper reported that in its closing argument, the state directed the jury to regard Smith's behavior as a manipulative tool: "[Solicitor] Pope said the prosecution's theory is that Smith 'pretends to commit these acts to gain sympathy."'
In our society, if we are worthy of sympathy it follows that we deserve special consideration and leniency. In this original, provocative study, Candace Clark gives intriguing evidence that people do not innately know when, for whom, and in what circumstances sympathy is appropriate. Rather, they learn elaborate, highly specific cultural rules-different rules for men than for women-that guide when to feel or display sympathy, when to claim it, and how to accept it. Clark approaches sympathy as an important form of social currency. We learn early in life that sympathy must be evenly exchanged; that our "sympathy margins"-our accounts of sympathy credits we can call on in time of need-are limited. In her often amusing narrative, Clark describes the do's and don'ts of "sympathy etiquette," cultural rules that people must follow to protect their sympathy margins.
Most disturbing is Clark's identification of a darker, less obvious side of sympathy-its function as a manipulative tool in everyday encounters. What exactly happens when someone gives another sympathy? Is the receiver pleased? Is the relationship solid? Or does the receiver feel belittled and hurt? When our sympathy exposes another's problems or inability to handle those problems, a show of sympathy can humiliate or diminish the receiver. Generally, Clark constructs a kind of social tour of sympathy, revealing that the emotional experience we modern Americans call sympathy has a history, a logic, and a life of its own.
This sociology of sympathy provides a look at the mostly tacit rules of behavior that govern our expressions of sympathy in American society. Sympathy is not an easy behavior to follow because of factors of class, race, gender and multicultural expectations. As work styles change and as the plight of the poor continues to burden our social conscience, Clark sees the possibility for some norms of sympathy to evolve and change. The volume provides a reasonable look at the social context in which we express sympathy and gage its fairness and appropriateness.

Build a foundation in basic magic.

Picture Yourself As a Magician by Wayne N. Kawamoto (2008) is a beginner's book on magic.

Best Features: (1) This book is profusely illustrated with full color photos. (2) Contemporary props make new effects, such as iPod magic, possible for the first time. (3) The book itself is used as a prop for four of the effects: "The World's Best Card Trick," "Picture Yourself as a Magician - Revelation 2," "The Clock," and "The Mind Reader." (4) A DVD filled with demos and lessons is included inside the back cover of the book. The lessons include additional effects that are not taught in the book. One of the added effects is a cute sawing-a-woman-in-half trick that can be done close-up with homemade props.

I hope you like card tricks because six of the fourteen chapters in this book are devoted to card magic. In addition, several of the remaining chapters in the book include one or more card tricks in them. For example, the chapter on "Mind Reading and Future Predictions" includes an effect with a gimmicked deck of cards. The chapter on "Stand-Up and Stage Magic" includes a pick-a-card trick that uses a giant playing card as a prop. The chapter on "Magic for the Street" contains four card tricks: "The Mysterious Kiss," "Card to Wallet," "Card on Wall," and "Card Monte." The chapter on "Party Magic" includes two card tricks: "The Red Card" and "Touch a Card." The chapter on "Electronic Magic with iPods" incorporates two card tricks: "Card Detector" and "Card Transporter."

The amount of space given to card magic does not go to waste. The diligent disciple of card magic will learn basic card handling and sleight-of-hand with cards (use of a key card, false cut, card force, cross-cut force, false shuffle, Hindu Shuffle, double undercut) along with some great card tricks, such as, "The Rising Card," "Do As I Do," "Lost and Found," and the "Ten-Card Poker Deal." You will also learn how to use trick decks (Svengali Deck & Stripper Deck) in the correct manner.

My Favorite Chapter: I especially liked Chapter 12 on Levitation. Three different levitations are described ("The Balducci Levitation," "The Jacket Levitation," and "The Box Levitation"), all three of which are suitable for the street and can be done outdoors.

My Favorite Quote: "It's the experience that truly burnishes a routine."

My Only Gripe: The DVD was unexpectedly glued to the pocket that encased it. I had to find a solvent that would remove the sticky residue from the DVD's front, back, and edge. WD-40 to the rescue!

Carlo Collodi is the pen name of Italian author Carlo Lorenzini, creator of the beloved children s character, Pinocchio. A Tuscan who fought in Italy s wars of unification, Collodi was already a famous novelist and popular translator of French fairy tales when he began to contribute chapters in the life of a marionette to Italy s first newspaper for children, Il Giornale per i Bambini. The adventures of the disobedient puppet were an immediate success and Pinocchio s story has been translated and adapted numerous times, including the classic 1940 animated production from Walt Disney. Collodi died in 1890.

Great Italian edition from Amazon, always a nice surprise to be able to get foreign language novels domestically instead of paying outrageous shipping fees. The font is very small, that's my only critique. Good edition otherwise.

Very good but preachy

Le Avventure di Pinocchio seems to be primarily a cautionary tale about the virtues of filial obedience and a strong work ethic. Disobedient and lazy children will face perils such as robbery, slavery, and potential death, while repentant and industrious ones will eventually attain their heart's desire. Collodi writes well, and can be very imaginative, but his sermonizing gets to be heavy handed and repetitious, and is often quite annoying.

Pinocchio risulta essere uno dei libri pi� venduti a livello mondiale di tutta la storia della letteratura e certamente merita di esserlo.
Secondo me si pu� collocare fra gli pseudolibri per bambini, come il Piccolo Pricipe, che andrebbe letto e riletto pi� volte nelle diverse fasi della propria vita per apprezzarne i diversi aspetti.

Fra le edizioni illustrate consiglio certamente questa edizione perch� contiene ben 82 disegni di Enrico Mazzanti presenti fin dalle prime edizioni storiche del libro e ormai anche nell'immaginario collettivo, come quella della copertina.

About the Author

Dr Martin Axmann is a political scientist focussed on ethno- nationalist movements of the Indian sub-continent. Martin Axmann has studied political science, international law, and economy at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg (MA 1997). His field work has concentrated on Pakistan, particularly on Sindh, the North-West Frontier Province, and the Iran-Pakistan transborder region of Baluchistan. His research interests include state and nation building in the post-colonial world, and the emergence and development of sub- nationalist movements within larger nation states. He works as a private lecturer and is associated to the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute of Socio-Political Research in Freiburg since 1996. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Freiburg (2007), and is presently carrying out postdoctoral research on the evolution of the Baluch national movement and its players.

A book that resides outside of the often-essential Cisco Press series of books, Cisco IOS Cookbook delivers the goods. I'd like to see more coverage of Ethernet switching, which is a huge part of Cisco's business (and many modern Cisco Catalyst releases run IOS now). Communication between Ethernet and Token Ring is fully covered, however. Otherwise, this is an excellent, accurate and razor-sharp configuration reference for Cisco router hounds. Very good coverage of all L3 routing protocols and subjects such as serial interface and CSU/DSU setup, all of which I've done in previous jobs. Check out the Chapter 19 section on Access Lists. Great book for Cisco router admins

This book should be on every Cisco & network admin's shelf! If you manage several Cisco routers, this book is packed with loads of time-saving tips, tricks, scripts, and real world solutions to make router management easy and take the pain out of repetitive daily processes. Some Perl & Unix knowledge is helpful as well as some basic "CCNA level" understanding of Cisco IOS. Troubleshooting and configuration commands are taken to the next level beyond most boring and dry CCNA and Cisco Intro books.

Best Cisco Book By Far!

I purchased the 1st edition and it is been the best Cisco resource, if you need to find out something quick, reach for this book. So when I saw the 2nd Edition I knew I had to update to it, same great book with even more.
