Top guide to this southeastern European frontier

Whether you consider Bosnia and Herzegovina to be the edge of the Earth or the middle of everything, there's no question that this modest southeastern European country is a true frontier. As with many frontier "shatter zones" that have seen difficult political times of late, Bosnia and Herzegovina contains many more sites for exploration than many travelers are willing to seek. That's where an excellent guide like this comes in.

Bradt guides are always excellent because they are written by people who have not only the requisite knowledge of the place, but they also have an uncompromising love for the history and culture as well. This book is no exception. Tim has a deep knowledge and respect for the complex history and culture of the country, and that is on display in the book. The book is wonderfully comprehensive, both in its coverage of places to see and do, as well as in places to stay, eat and shop. These kinds of listings are essential for a country recovering from a brutal war, where both wonderful and horrible could be around each corner.

The guide to Sarajevo - a city frequently called a European Jerusalem that is really more like Tbilisi - is worth the price of the book alone. Not only is Sarajevo a fascinating mix of cultures and traditions, its continuing recovery from 1,000 days of siege makes it a dynamic place to visit. Here's a book that presents that city better than any other guide you can buy, and you get detailed coverage of the rest of the country as an encore! Of course, there's Mostar and Travnik and Banja Luka and Bihac. But there's also the small towns in between that make getting lost more fun. Watch out for those mines!

There's a perfect balance between cultural and natural attractions that display the best of what Bosnia and Herzegovina has to offer. Remember, Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.

All practicalities are simply rendered with minimum confusion. Maps are very, very simple. Almost too much so. Really, a book this good should have better maps.

If there's one criticism I have of the book it is that it's getting to be just a bit out of date now. A new edition will be necessary certainly within the next year.

Very fact-finding and written by a good source.

Amazing stats and figures. The info is very good and it has answered many questions I had to ask. I am pleased with the content, which enables me to plan a safe trip to Bosnia, in the future. The weather conditions and seasons, have been a big help as well.

I haven't finished reading the books yet, as I am busy at work. I plan to learn as much of the language (for travel) as I can. I can't wait to read all four books that I have purchased. I will rate them, as I read them.

I have good friends in Bosnia and I am so looking forward to visiting their country (by invitation). A beautiful family.....!!!

Great information on places and culture

I am traveling to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the fall and this book is very helpful in the planning process. It spells out information about even very small towns. It is also a great resource on the history, people, and culture. There aren't really any other resources dedicated solely to BiH so it is lucky that this one is so well done. It has made me excited for the trip to such a beautiful looking place with people who have already been very friendly to me in the planning process. If you are thinking of traveling here, buy this book.

While Creon eventually agrees to Antigone's release, it is too late: She takes her own life, initiating a tragic repetition of events in her family's history.

*Starred Review* There are many translations of Sophocles' Antigone but few with the understated power and spare beauty of Irish Nobel laureate Heaney's version. He has given the play a new title, The Burial at Thebes, that recalls both Antigone's punishment--to be walled up in a cave-- and the crime for which she is punished. He remains faithful to the letter and the spirit of the play, following the structure of Sophocles' fine storytelling beat-by-beat even as he finds words to make this classic story of conflict between an inflexible autocrat and an intransigent rebel legible to modern readers. Reading Heaney's achievement, it is hard not to think of the ongoing eye-for-an-eye-for-an-eye-for-an-eye debacle unfolding in Iraq. Written in a muscular but lively style, the translation, like Heaney's best poetry, finds music in the language of the streets and reveals the raw, primal power in the most carefully constructed rhetorical tropes. This is hardly surprising. In 1990 Heaney wrote The Cure at Troy, a translation of Sophocles' Philoctetes, for the Irish Field Day theater company, and met with great critical acclaim. Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995. His poems, plays, translations, and essays include Opened Ground, Electric Light, Beowulf, The Spirit Level, District and Circle, and Finders Keepers. Robert Lowell praised Heaney as the "most important Irish poet since Yeats."

I have read other translations and even seen movies on the section of Sophocles.

This version of the play “The burial at Thebes”, first preformed at The Abby Theater April 5, 2004 is one of the cleanest strait forward, easiest to get involved in versions.

You may even feel that you are infovlved or at least watching the evening news of today.

I have read Beowulf (Seamus Heaney) and look forward to reading his other works.

Great help

My son is taking AP Psych online in High School and this has been a wonderful tool to help with the things that he needs to know for not only this class, but to help him prepare for the AP Exam at the end of the year. Received the book very promptly, it was in brand new condition and we are very pleased. Would definately buy from this seller again. Thanks!

Half-decent summaries, contains multiple errors.

I have encountered errors in Princeton Review books before, but they've mostly been harmless. In one case, an attempt to refer to something funny that happened in history... that was also completely a myth. I'll admit, I've only read parts of this AP Psychology review book because my actual textbook for AP Psychology is so comprehensive, but after taking the practice test, I cannot recommend this book to anyone unless they are absolutely desperate for any review book.

Question 88 in the first practice tests asks a fairly innocuous question, about which of the choices would be most likely to have anorexia nervosa. (A good answer: females are more likely than men). Instead, they provide the answer as "Maria, a 16-year-old Caucasian female... who feels that her life is out of control", with the reason that the "typical anorexic [is] white female, teenager, usually good student, [with] need for control... who seems confident and successful" based on no evidence whatsoever. (No research I've found mentions *anything* about being a "white female" who is a "good student" that seems "confident and successful".)

In addition to the egregious error, they confuse positive and negative reinforcement in another question from the same practice exam. (A common mistake for AP students, but I expect better of a book helping to prepare AP students!) I didn't even bother looking at the free-response questions they gave, I'm sure the official ones on collegeboard are actually worth looking at.

In conclusion: I am absolutely certain there are better AP Psychology crack books out there. I happen to own one, and a great textbook.

Poorly written, vague

I am only a few chapters into this review book, but so far the content has been good but the writing really sucks and makes it hard to read. Many sentences are poorly written and/or very vague.

Case 1. For example, its description of a Type I error in inferential statistics:
"Two primary types of errors can occur when testing a hypothesis. Type I error refers to the conclusion that a difference exists when in fact this difference does not exist."

... Huh? Difference in what?

Case 2. Definition of functionalism:
"James, who was heavily influenced by Darwin, believed that the important thing to understand is how the mind fulfills its purpose. This function-oriented approach is appropriately called functionalism."

For example..? I have no idea what this means. How the mind fulfills its purpose? What is the purpose?

Overall it just seems like this was hastily constructed and not proof-read. Readability suffers.

Good content, but far too little of it for the price

To be clear, the technical content is generally quite good, although it is very high level (you won't find any concrete implementation examples here, or even crisply-specified schematic level descriptions of worked examples), there is nontrivial repetition, and (to my taste) there is a lack of conciseness, taking three pages to say something when one page would do.
My main complaint is that at $39.99 list (~$30 on Amazon), there's just not enough content—a mere 146 pages, and those are small pages with a fairly large font. It's as if these (very knowledgeable) authors submitted an extended outline for something that would have made a great but long technical article, and O'Reilly rushed them into turning it into a short book as quickly as possible.
I've been perusing listings for other recent O'Reilly titles on this topic—Susan Fowler's "Production-ready Microservices" has been highly praised, but offers 172 pages for $38 (Amazon price), which is hard to justify for a technical book. If you bought both, you'd have spent ~$68 for ~300 pages of content that doesn't include much in the way of specifics.
O'Reilly used to be the "go to" for concisely-written, clear, good-value books on rapidly-changing technical topics, but if this is what they've become, it's a lot less compelling.

Great book with high level positioning of MSA, as well as practical patterns

I really like his book. It is short and clear. It explans what MSA is, why and how it came about, and what its main advantages are. It also offers some handy methods/patterns that enable you to deal with situations where microservices have shared data. Very usefull.(The book does not contain any code).

I was intrigued by the HyperMedia style, which is a way to make the message based communication between services less fragile. So, I went out and bought the predecessor book "RESTful Web APIs: Services for a Changing World." which supposedly covers this topic in greater deal.

Ellsberg's transformation from cold warrior and Defense Department analyst to impassioned antiwar crusader who released the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in June 1971 makes a remarkable and riveting story that still shocks 30 years later. Avoiding, for the most part, self-justification and self-aggrandizement, he clearly relates the experiences that led him to reject as arrogant lies the premises six presidents presented to the public and Congress to secure support for the Vietnam War. He describes the disjunction between what he saw during visits to Vietnam in the early and mid-'60s, driving through dangerous Viet Cong-held territory, and what was told to the press and public. And he recalls his first reading of the classified documents later known as the Pentagon Papers, which exposed the motives, in his view unprincipled, behind American involvement in Vietnam. Ellsberg creates page-turning human drama and suspense in both his descriptions of his early experience accompanying U.S. combat missions in Vietnam and his days spent underground evading an FBI manhunt after the Times's publication of the Papers. Before leaking the Pentagon Papers, which documented U.S. foreign-policy failures and deceit in Vietnam from 1945 to 1968, Ellsberg was a gung-ho advisor to the State and Defense departments. One fascinating part of this story is his growing disenchantment with the war during these years. He came to believe that leaking the top-secret papers and other classified documents was a patriotic act that could help end the war. Other fascinating aspects of this account include Ellsberg's frustrated attempts to find a member of Congress who would accept and use the papers to build a case against the war as well as his growing role in the antiwar movement. President Nixon failed in his strong-arm tactics to discredit Ellsberg, and the case against him was dismissed because of the illegal break-in at the office of Dr Lewis Fielding, Ellsberg's psychiatrist. Interestingly, Ellsberg speculates that the break-in by Nixon's "Plumbers" was as much an attempt to blackmail Fielding as it was a gambit to stop Ellsberg. The book suffers somewhat from the overabundance of detail and repetition that also flawed Tom Wells's Wild Man: The Life and Times of Daniel Ellsberg. However, Ellsberg's autobiographical account provides insight into the disturbing abuses of presidential power that plagued the Vietnam/Watergate era. Recommended for public libraries.

Call it "the Gary Cooper factor": pop culture (and pop history) demands a certain modesty (like that of Cooper's "aw shucks" film characters) from American heroes. So Ellsberg hasn't fit comfortably into the American pantheon. His signal contribution also remains controversial: Ellsberg "leaked" the Pentagon Papers, but those voluminous documents were simply a history of the Vietnam War few Americans actually read. They offered few surprises but did confirm the antiwar movement's charge that the government had lied to its citizens. An unlikely whistleblower, Ellsberg was a Harvard economics Ph.D. who shifted between government appointments and the RAND Corporation and spent significant time in Vietnam--a quintessential "defense intellectual." Even after he decided the "top-secret" Pentagon Papers should be released, he spent nearly two years trying to convince various dovish politicians to take the lead. The Pentagon Papers went to the press--the New York Times and, later, the Washington Post and other outlets--only because no one else would reveal them. The Nixon administration's hysterical reaction "justified" a number of the Watergate crimes that brought down Nixon's presidency. In this memoir of his years working first for and then against the U.S. defense establishment, Ellsberg clearly regrets he took action so many years after he realized the Vietnam War could not be won. Rare History

Ellsberg is a driven man--driven toward solving puzzles and righting that which is wrong. The intensity of his intellect and the breadth of his insider experience would have made Daniel Ellsberg an amazing historian of the Vietnam War even if he hadn't become an anti-war activist. The fact that he had--in the end--studied both sides, and that eventually he had access not only to the Pentagon Papers but also the Nixon Whitehouse tapes allowed him to explain the war and its perpetrators with a rare combination of vividness and authority.

Judging from what is written in today's newspapers, the patterns Ellsberg describes in Secrets are repeating themselves in the Iraq War. _Secrets_ deserves to be widely read, as a lesson in courage, as history, and as a warning to those of us who might be tempted to sit back and trust unquestioningly those who would lead us into war then resist bringing us back out.

Spellbinding Recounting Of The Pentagon Papers Story!

After finding this book quite by accident while browsing through the wonderful Concord bookstore the other day, I was astounded to find how relevant and interesting a story author Daniel Ellsberg manages to conjure up after all this time regarding his legendary experience leading up to and including the leaking, release and publication of the infamous "Pentagon Papers' by the New York Times. As he explains early in the long yet fascinating monologue, he fully expected to be sentenced to a long prison sentence for having secreted a copy of the highly classified Department of Defense's official history of the American Government's policy and involvement in Vietnam. The report was a damning confirmation of the worst fears of the anti-war movement, and provided overwhelming evidence of the cynical, manipulative, and deceitful character of our government and its deceit to its own people regarding its involvement.

What surprised Ellsberg most in all of this swirling excitement and activity was his own growing celebrity, and while he spent years fearing the worst for his own admitted culpability in defying criminal statues by stealing and leaking official government secrets, eventually the charges against him were dropped based, among other things, on the revelations of the Nixon's plumber's unit's illegal break-in at Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Ellsberg was an unlikely hero, a graduate of the Harvard University economics doctoral program, a former marine officer turned defense issue intellectual, a frequent visitor to Vietnam who was rankled by the distinct difference between what he was seeing and experiencing during his visits, on the one hand, and what the official American government position regarding what the situation was on the ground on the other.

Based on this growing dissatisfaction and the discovery of the so-called Pentagon papers, a treasure trove of more than 7,000 pages of carefully documented details about the U.S. Government's involvement in Vietnam and its motives, considerations, and actions, Ellsberg tried to enlist the support of a number of Senators and Congressmen in an effort to use the evidence in the Pentagon Papers to undercut the Government's position and thereby end the war itself. Failing to do so, he finally surrendered the documents to the New York Times, which agreed to publish them through a series of daily excerpts (and also later in an abridged best-selling paperback version). The Government tried to stop publication, but was denied the right to do so by the Supreme Court. Of course, with the publication came an increase in public opposition to the war and a recognition of the degree to which the Executive branch and the military had intentionally misled the public regarding the conduct of the war and the situation on the ground for the moir� than 500,000 troops then stationed in-country. Still, it took more than five more years before the American involvement in Vietnam ended.

This is a wonderful book to experience, and in reading it one comes to recognize the formidable skills Ellsberg brings to bear in terms of his amazing recall, eye for details, and ability to successfully juggle a variety of interacting considerations at the same time. This guy is smarter than the average teddy bear, and it is easy to see how difficult a task it would have been for the Department of Defense and the nitwits over in the White House to try to outmaneuver him. I was a bit surprised at some of the personal revelations in the book, and while it is obvious that Mr. Ellsberg has a healthy ego, he manages for the most part to keep it at bay in retelling a story that could have easily have devolved in a retelling of the David against Goliath epic, but which he keeps objective and factual enough to keep the story rolling along as a recounting of the gripping events that transpired more than thirty years ago and helped to turn the tide of public opinion toward the war in Vietnam. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in 20th century American history. Enjoy!
