In Brett Colton's ears, in his mind, the shrill keening of tornado sirens eclipsed all other sound, despite that he and Outlaw were too far into the backcountry for the sirens to be more than a figment of his imagination—his intuition warning him that this mission was a really stupid plan because there were a hundred ways to die in a storm this angry.

There was no fury in hell or on earth that compared to an Oklahoma thunderstorm when it decided to unleash a twister. The clouds above Tulsa churned, glowing gray green. Golf-ball-sized hail pelted Brett's Stetson and the back of his oiled leather duster. He folded forward, shielding Outlaw's neck and mane from the brunt of the hail's force as best he could, though neither man nor steed were strangers to the elements.

One of these days, Brett's guardian angels would give him up as a lost cause, but, God willing, it wasn't going to be today. Not with so much on the line. Not after everything his family had been through in the past month or the sharp edge of disappointment in his father's and brother's eyes when Brett had broken it to them about the downed fence and the missing cattle. As if Brett had let the herd loose on purpose. As if he was still the same reckless punk he'd been four months ago.

Then again, maybe Brett hadn't completely vanquished the recklessness from his blood, because here he was, racing across the rolling plains of the Lucky C ranch's backcountry, straight toward the deadly funnel forming in the distance. Any minute, a flash flood might come rocketing through, if lightning or a twister didn't hit down first, but he refused to return to the Lucky C homestead without the half dozen pregnant cows that had escaped.

The downed fence was a mystery that Brett would have to contemplate later. He'd checked that line himself the week before. All he knew was that the ranch that he'd once thought of as a fortress was no longer an impenetrable haven for his family, and the decades of peace and prosperity that the Coltons had enjoyed had been shattered beyond repair.

Brett had followed the tracks of the six stampeding cows southwest, keeping them in sight through the rain and the darkening sky, right up until the clouds had let loose with hail. With zero visibility and the cows' hoof-prints lost in the churned-up ground and melting balls of ice, he was riding with nothing to guide him but the hunch that the cows had headed toward Vulture Ridge, as the stock on the ranch had done so many times over the years. As long as they'd had enough sense to stop at the ridge instead of going over the edge—Lord, please don't let them have gone over the edge—Brett would find a way to get them back to the Lucky C before the twister touched down.

Outlaw expertly cut around scrub trees and boulders without losing speed until Vulture Ridge came into view.

"Gotcha," Brett said, though his words were lost in a crash of thunder.

Four of the cows crowded at the edge of the infamous gully, their hind hooves pawing at the muddy, disintegrating ledge and baying, clearly terrified. Brett slowed Outlaw to a trot and instead of closing in on the cows head-on, guided the horse in a wide arc. Then he rode along the ridge and came up on the cows from the side. Outlaw knew the drill, imposing his authority to the cattle, crowding and nudging them away from the edge.

Once they complied, Brett craned his neck to scan the expanse of prairie land for the remaining two cows. One, he spotted immediately, huddled against a boulder, but the other was nowhere to be seen. Fearing what he'd find, Brett turned his focus to the gully below Vulture Ridge that had been carved out by centuries of flash floods. The missing cow's ear came into view first, tagged with a green tag that meant she was a heifer—a young first-time mom who was probably beyond freaked out at the moment.

He dismounted and got closer to the edge. The heifer was perched on a narrow outcrop of dirt and rock ten feet below the lip of the ridge, lying on her side, propped against the ridge wall, her massive round belly undulating. She was in labor, and the way she was angled, when the calf was born, it would fall the additional ten feet or so into the gully's basin. That is, if the ledge didn't crumble and the heifer didn't fall herself, first.

This time, Brett's curse was loud enough to be heard over the storm. An older, seasoned cow might have been amenable to Brett's efforts to get her standing and help her pick her way out of the gully, but he already knew this heifer wasn't going to make his life easy like that. He was standing next to Outlaw, debating his options, when a thunderclap sounded so loudly that Brett's teeth rattled. The four cows they'd gathered immediately spooked and took off along the gully ridge.

Brett swung up into the saddle again. Shaking away the water and ice from his face, he set his teeth on his lower lip and whistled in the same tone he used on the livestock around the ranch, the one that often worked—in normal conditions, anyway—as a command for them to stop. These particular cows weren't interested in commands. If anything, they picked up their pace.

He gave another, different toned whistle command to Outlaw and the horse surged toward the cattle as Brett reached for his lasso. Throwing it in this weather would be a crapshoot at best, but he had to try. He secured the rope in his hands, then drove Outlaw faster, getting in front of the cows and cutting them off.

He waited until they were right up on the beasts to throw the lasso. It caught the neck of the farthest cow, just as it was supposed to, so he cinched it nice and tight and brought all four cows crowded between the lassoed cow and Outlaw's body.

"Thataway, Outlaw," he called over the wind and hail, stroking the gelding's neck. "Thataway."

They maneuvered the cattle to a cluster of shrubs not too far away from where the fifth cow was still huddled by the boulder. Brett swung off the saddle, then looped the other end of the rope around the neck of a second cow. He tied another rope around the necks of the third and fourth cows and hooked all the ropes into the branches of the sturdiest scrub tree. It wasn't all that secure, should another thunderclap spook them again, but it was the best he could do for now.

He left Outlaw standing near them, but refused to tie him to the tree, even if it meant Brett getting stranded should the gelding take off. Because what if the horse needed to flee with good reason? What if Brett didn't make it out of the gully alive? Brett would rather chance getting stranded than put his horse in any unnecessary danger, which was a vital part of the cowboy code he lived by.

Brett threaded his head and an arm through his last bundle of rope from his saddle bag, then stroked Outlaw's neck and got close to his ear. "You stay with the stock. Keep 'em calm for me until I get back." For all he knew, Outlaw understood every word. He liked to imagine that bit of magic, anyway.

It wasn't until he was slogging to the edge of Vulture Ridge that he realized how soaked-to-the-bones he was.

The muddy ground sucked at his boots, and his jeans felt as if they weighed twenty pounds. He flapped the tails of his duster around his body, then checked the collar to make sure it was standing on end, but still, bits of hail wormed their way between his collar and his hat to melt against his neck. Sniffing, his eyes downturned and marking each labored step, he put his shoulder to the wind and pressed on.

The heifer was lying on her side still, but didn't seem to have given birth yet. Her hooves hovered in midair over the gully that was rapidly filling with water. The path she'd slid down was steep, but wouldn't be impossible for her to traverse back up over the ridge—if he could get her standing again.

He was debating the merits of risking his life for a single livestock, when the heifer brayed, a pained, fearful cry. Then one of her hind legs and her tail lifted. The water sac was visible already.

"Holy day…" Brett muttered.

The calf was coming.

He slid down the mud wall following the same path the heifer had. There wasn't enough room on the ledge for both of them to fit comfortably. His boot heels cut into the dirt wall as he skirted her body to reach her tail. The calf's tail was crowning first.

"Damn it. This baby's not making it easy on you, is it, girl?" Brett wiped his muddy hands on his coat, then pushed the calf's rump back in. Working by feel, he located the hind legs and positioned them one at a time in the birthing canal.

The heifer brayed and kicked out. If they were at the ranch, Brett would've secured her in a head gate and called for help. All he had now was luck, a single rope and his wits, and he was going to need all three to birth the calf before it died.

He took off his coat and draped it over the heifer's face, hoping the reduction of stimulus from the rain and storm would calm her down. No luck. She kicked harder, and before Brett had gotten back in position near her tail, she tipped over the edge of the outcropping and slid into the rapidly-filling gully.

Brett followed, his rope in his hand. The water was three feet deep and rising. The rain and hail beat down relentlessly as the wind whipped up. Time to get this calf birthed and get the hell out of there before they all lost their lives. The cow, on her side in the gully, strained to keep her head above water. Brett slogged to her backside again, the water and mud caking his legs and seeping into his boots. He wrapped the rope around the calf's legs once, twice, three times.

He wiggled his boots into the riverbed, bracing himself, then got a firm hold of the rope and pulled, growling with the effort. The calf slid another four or five inches out. Panting, Brett adjusted his grip on the rope, then pulled again. This time, the calf came. Brett fell backward in the water, the calf on his chest.

With a laugh of triumph, Brett cleaned the calf's nose out with his finger, then tickled its ear to get it breathing. Then a golf-ball-sized piece of hail smacked Brett hard on his cheek, killing his awe over the miracle of helping birth a new life and reminding him of the danger all around them.

He pushed to his feet, bringing the calf up in his arms. He worked to untie the rope from the calf's hind legs with one eye on the steep side of the gully. The water was above Brett's knees, sloshing at his groin. He couldn't get the rope around the mama cow and keep his hold on the wiggling calf, so he'd have to come back down for her.

He'd pulled himself and the calf a good five feet up the gully wall when he heard it, a roar like no other he'd heard before. Not thunder, not a twister. Something otherworldly that got louder, closer. The gully walls vibrated with the force. A flash flood. Had to be.

In full panic mode, Brett hauled himself to the ledge that the cow had originally slid onto. He grabbed his duster from where the cow had tossed it away from her face. He threw it up to the top of the ridge, then hauled himself and the calf the rest of the way up, his fingers and boot toes digging into the muddy wall, pushing the calf up in front of him with his chest. He heaved the calf over the top of the ridge as a wall of water appeared in the gully, bearing down on their location.

Brett scrambled to safety and got on his knees. As fast as he could, he wound the rope back and set the lasso loop down to the mama cow. Maybe he could anchor her there so she wouldn't get swept away. Maybe the floodwaters weren't as high and fast as they looked.

The flash flood hit her hard, rolling her under. The rope pulled on him as though he was playing tug-of-war with a whole football team. There was nothing to do but let go. He'd heard too many accounts of ranchers getting swept into floodwater and drowning because they were too stubborn to lose their livestock.

Brett's legs were shaky and weak with an adrenaline crash as he stood, following with his gaze the glimpse of the cow's head in the water until she disappeared. The floodwaters gurgled and spit at the edge of the gully wall. He stared at the water, trying not to think of the loss as a failure. After all, he'd saved the calf, five pregnant cows and his own life.

He swung his attention to the boulder where he'd left the other cows and Outlaw. Outlaw was still there, but none of the cows. Damn it.

He pulled his drenched, muddy coat on, then lifted the calf into his arms again and trudged to his horse, his eyes on the storm front that looked to be moving away from them. At least one thing had gone his way today.

Outlaw nuzzled his cheek.

"Thanks for waiting for me," Brett said. "Happen to see which direction those cows went?"

Could've been his imagination, but Outlaw snorted in reply.

He scratched the horse's neck. "Good. How about you lead me to them so we can call it a day?"

He lifted the calf onto the saddle first, then hoisted himself up, the weight of the water and mud making him feel a good fifty pounds heavier than he had when he'd left the stable. The orphaned calf looked up at him, helpless and trusting. Brett usually didn't think of the livestock as cute, but this one surely was, with long lashes, a soft buttercream-colored coat and a pink nose. He wrapped his coat around it and held it close.

"We'll get you home soon and make you up a bottle as soon as we find your mama's friends. I do believe we're gonna name you Twister. How does that sound?"

The calf's tongue came out to lick a pebble of hail from its nose, the cutest thing Brett might've ever seen besides his nephew, Seth.

Jack, Brett's oldest brother, was going to be furious about the loss of the cow. Already, he didn't trust Brett, and this wasn't going to help. But Brett was tired of working under his brother like some hired hand, getting his butt chewed for every perceived misstep. He was ready to redeem his reputation and earn his slice of the Colton legacy—and he had just the plan to make it work. All he needed now was to hire a financial whiz to help him crunch the numbers and profit projections he'd need to help Jack see his point of view.

With a whistle and a nudge of Brett's boots, Outlaw burst into motion back through the storm toward home while Brett's mind churned, plotting and planning his next move to seize a hold of his bright future once and for all.

Delightful new to me romantic suspense series
By Jeanie Jackson
Melissa Cutler is a artist with romance and romantic suspense and Colton's Cowboy Code is a prime example of how she builds her characters and relationships to create a believable world filled with warmth, stresses, and danger.

When Hannah sets up a interview, she never imagines that it would be with her baby daddy or that he would envelop her in the warmth of his family. Or that her life would be endangered. One night celebrating her college graduation changes so much in the life of this young woman who has been pretty much bound by her too strict parents her whole life. Now it appears, she has the world at her feet. Ms. Cutler does not write cookie cutter stories, she creates world worth visiting.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Those are the only kinds of review I do, but it is a pleasure to be able to share my excitement in this book. I know she did not write all of the books in the series but will have to check out some of the others because she has made me care about he people.
I was disappointed at how difficult it was to find this book on Amazon. I finally went through Goodreads and had no trouble at all.

another great book!
By paula legate
This was a good story. It is part of (The Coltons of Oklahoma series) . In the first book of the series, Someone had attacked Brett's mother inside her room at the ranch. Throughout the book she was still in the hospital in a coma. The police was working the investigation. When the book ended she was still in the coma, and we still didn't know who attacked her.

I enjoyed Hannah, and Brett. They shared on hot night. That night lead to Hannah getting pregnant. The two acted like grown adults and became partners. it was a pleasure to read a book where the hero and heroine didn't fight. someone was after the Colton family, Hannah included. Brett and his brothers were determined to protect the family. I loved how the Colton family accepted Hannah, and thought of the baby that she carried as a miracle.
There was a little action, and the romance was sweet. Hannah was funny with her pregnant hormones, and cravings. I really enjoyed the Colton family. They are a close family. I've really enjoyed this series so far. Looking forward to reading the other books.

Good book
By S. Frank
Good book. Brett is the youngest of the Colton sons and has always felt like a disappointment to his parents. When he was younger, he expressed those feelings by living down to those expectations. After a car accident a few months ago woke him up, he has vowed to make changes in his life. He's now paying attention to his responsibilities on the ranch and has plans to expand the horse breeding side of the ranch. To that end, he's trying to hire an accountant who can help him with the business plan he'll need to convince the rest of the family.

Brett is surprised to discover that the accountant he's about to interview is the woman he had a one night stand with a few months earlier - and she's pregnant. Hannah is equally surprised by her potential employer. She's been waiting to contact him until she got her life back together. When her religious fanatic parents discovered she was pregnant they fired her from her job in their store and disowned her. Without a job, she lost her apartment and has been staying with a friend. This wasn't the way she wanted to tell Brett about his impending fatherhood.

Brett and Hannah really impressed me. There was no drama linked to the reveal. Brett doesn't accuse her of hiding the baby or trying to trap him into marriage, nor does Hannah accuse him of carelessness or anything like that. They talk about it calmly, as adults. I really liked the way that Brett is determined to take care of Hannah and the baby, and asks her to move to the ranch as well as take the job of accountant. Neither of them want to marry because "it's the right thing", as both have witnessed marriages that are not based on love and don't want that for themselves. Brett showed a great deal of protectiveness toward Hannah from the very beginning. I loved the way that he faced down his family the day that he told them about her.

The attraction between them is still hot. Hannah has accepted it, and really wouldn't mind acting on it again. As a matter of fact, she really wants to. But Brett is resisting just as hard as he can. He seems to look at giving in as continuing his previously irresponsible ways. He's also afraid that if they give in to the passion, if something goes wrong she'd leave the ranch and he wouldn't see his child. Having had his own absentee parent,he wasn't going to risk that happening. I really enjoyed seeing them grow closer through their desire to be good parents, and how eventually they realized their feelings for each other. The last chapter of the book was really sweet.

The suspense of the story was good. One part is the continuation from the first book. Brett's mother is still in the hospital from an attack that left her in a coma. They still don't know why she was attacked. There have been several attacks on the ranch, including a fire where photos from albums that were stolen from the house were found. There are also no clues about the identity of the baby bones that were found at the family cemetery. Some of the people are a little spooked because there has been a ghostlike woman spotted at various places around the ranch. Hannah has her own mystery that she's working on. While trying to bring order to the ranch books, she has noticed some irregularities that have her puzzled and concerned. She also has someone leaving her hateful messages. Brett is really worried about her safety. While the culprits for her issues were not a surprise, there were some really intense moments at the end. That resolution was pretty satisfying, at the same time the earlier issues are still unresolved. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

Great book, very useful, this is my go to book
By D. McGuinness
This book is info packed, every single detail you can think of for starting your own business, not as literature heavy as for example judy allens books. Very open and could apply to any kind of event planning business not just focused on one type of event like special events, corporate events or wedding planning. It has a step by step guide on things you will need to do, this book has been my bible for starting my business and I have ordered the 3rd edition as I already had the 2nd edition. Hands down the best book for starting your own event planning business (and I have ordered several books on this topic).

Very Basic with the Occasional Insight
By Gigi
I'm planning to launch an event design business in 2014, so I've read lots of articles, taken a few classes, and used several business planning books. I was particularly excited about this book because it seemed so specific to what I'm doing. I read straight through the entire book in a day. Many times I found the advice to be so basic and watered down that it was useless. The chapter on writing a business plan was so rudimentary it would more helpful as a sentence that reads, "To write a business plan consult a book on writing business plans." Oddly, the chapter gives extremely specific numbers regarding the plan saying something like it should take 300 hours to write and be 25 pages long, which I find a little bizarre given that the book is geared toward a wide audience and that the length and time spent on a business plan will depend on the size and type of business as well as the type of funding that will be sought, if any.

I've already taken on a number of expenses mentioned in the book, and found that every single dollar estimate given was completely inaccurate. My purchases have been small so far, so I'm not sure how accurate the larger dollar figures are.

The worksheets included in the book are sparse and extremely basic. I think they're a good start or exercise for someone who is just beginning to research the topic, but they're not actually functional.

In terms of writing style, I felt like the chapter introductions and conclusions were awkward and sometimes abrupt. There are no summaries at the end of each chapter, even in the form of a single sentence. Many times I hadn't realized that the chapter had ended until I saw the headline that a new one was beginning. I also found the book repetitive in many places. At times I felt that the same idea was bullet pointed 2 or 3 times in a single list with little variation in wording. I found these same repetitive bullet points presented over and over throughout the book as new ideas.

The other problem I have with the book is that it seems outdated in places. It's almost like the editors just added a few updated details to bring it up to date, but neglected to take out or update any outdated information. The number of times using the phone book or a pager is mentioned is concerning.

What I did find extremely helpful and insightful about this book was the information given on insurance, proposals and agreements, pricing, and cash flow. This information is very specific to the industry, and I felt it helped answer some of the lingering questions I've not been able to get answered with more general business planning books.

The book is geared toward a very general audience that includes stay-at-home moms interested in throwing children's birthday parties as a source of supplemental income to jet-setting corporate event planners, and everything in between. I think it's definitely a good place to start, and a good resource to keep on hand, but if you're serious about starting your own business you'll have to use more in-depth resources for things like writing a business plan.

event planning business
By Ms Claudie
The book focused on the business of event planning. It was not what I thought it was going to be, but it was still a good/informative read. I would suggest this book for anyone who is looking to start a business in event planning; however if you want to know more about events and establishing a career and what that entails, this might not be the book for you...

Happiness: Essential Mindfulness Practices, by Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh's central teaching is that, through mindfulness, we can learn to live in the present moment instead of in the past and in the future. It’s only way to truly develop peace, both in one's self and in the world. Now, for the first time, all of Thich Nhat Hanh’s key practices are collected in one accessible and easy-to-use volume. Happiness is structured to introduce those new to Buddhist teachings as well as for more experienced practitioners, Happiness is the quintessential resource of mindfulness practices. Integrating these practices into daily life allows the reader to begin to cultivate peace and joy within him/herself, leading to solidity and freedom from fear, misunderstanding, and suffering.

With the practices offered in Happiness Thich Nhat Hanh encourages the reader to learn to do all the things they do in daily life with mindfulness; to walk, sit, work, eat, and drive, with full awareness of what they are doing. It can bring about a shift towards one of the principles of engaged Buddhism, a shift towards practicing mindfulness in every moment of the day and not just while ‘formally’ meditating.

Thich Nhat Hanh encourages his readers to "try to be intelligent and skillful in their practice, approaching every aspect of the practice with curiosity and a sense of search. It’s important to practice with understanding and not just for the form and appearance. Enjoy your practice with a relaxed and gentle attitude, with an open mind and receptive heart."

Happiness: A Practical Workbook
By Konrei
Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh has been a prolific writer. Most books on Buddhism appeal more to the intellect or to the emotions than this one. HAPPINESS is a slim volume crammed with practical daily exercises on mindfulness, lovingkindness, and awareness. This book can be used by anyone, Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike, and it does not matter if you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner.

This book suggests simple, easily adaptable exercises on such primary actions as breathing, sitting, walking. awakening, eating and drinking, resting, and moving around. Exercises on such other mundane daily activities as using the telephone, coping with irritation and anger, cooking, traveling, and dealing with significant others, co-workers and strangers round out this book.

Zen is at its most effective when the practitioner brings the practice out of the Zendo and into the outside world. HAPPINESS is a concise, intelligent and easy-to-use guide on how to do that.

BEST Book on "Happiness" for Me!
By LovesAgoodRead
I've read a few :-) "Tay's" writing always speaks to my experiences in the most gentle yet reassuring manner. This book was to be savored. Passages read were digested with time and further thought. Each time I picked up the book again, I'd find myself smiling. (This result is clearly evident when one hasn't smiled for a long time!)

What I love most about this book is finding philosophy laced with practical approaches to routine daily living. A lot of emphasis in living in the "present moment." For a long time, even the "present moment" concept was difficult for me to grasp, to truly comprehend the meaning, the experience. Thich Nhat Hanh clarified the idea of past, present, future in a way I had not understood before reading this book.

This book is a wonderful gift - from "Tay," for you, and for someone you love.

A valuable and slightly different look at his teachings.
By compostfan
I have a lot of books by Thich Nhat Hanh, and each one has a slightly different twist on his teachings. This one is no different.

I have read most of them from cover to cover, and find I can go back and open a book randomly and find a treasure trove of insight.

This one delves into daily practice in more detail than others I have.

Also known as “waterless toilets”, “dry toilets” and “biological toilets”, the composting toilet is actually a toilet with the main goal of breaking down human waste into humus, a substance that resembles soil, rather than flushing it down the sewer system where vast amounts of chemicals and water are used to do what nature does naturally.

My first compost toilet was one of these fancy shmancy $2000 units. It lasted 3 months. Before purchasing a different style I decided to take what I know of Anaerobic decomposition of organic matter and put it to the test building my own compost toilet. That was over 10 years ago and I still have the same toilet. That’s longer than most people own conventional toilets for.

I’ll show you step by step how to make 2 very simple styles of home composting toilets, which operate better, cleaner and will last longer than any model on the market today for a tenth of the price.

Needs some revision...
By S. H. Summers
I hesitate to be too critical of a book like this, for several reasons:
1. It's a self-published work (though an editor would be very helpful for the next revision)
2. It's only 4.99
3. It's on a "green" topic, which I want to encourage

I have a few minor nits, such as the usual grammatical errors, pictures that display oddly on the Kindle (with large areas containing highlights that display as black), etc., but I'll primarily stick to the main things that I personally would have liked to have been apprised of before buying this product myself. Hopefully this helps someone.

Firstly, there is not much content germane to the topic at hand. It's hard to say how many "pages" of content there are when using the Kindle, but the first fully 50% of the book covers general green topics such as climate change, definitions of alternative energy and its sources, the author's alleged resume, advertisements for the author's other titles, etc. Then, the closing 10% of the book is similar advertising for the author's other pamphlets and services, another discussion of his resume (there is a continuing claim to be a "retired" aerospace engineer...at age 25, LoL. Sorry, but if you're that age you didn't retire, you just quit your job.) So in all, the actual useful content of the book is only about 40%. Personally, I wouldn't have been upset if the rest of the information had been cut out, and the book was just made shorter; however, there is at least a bit more content that could be added, which would help alleviate this anyway, as I suggest next.

There needs to be some references to suppliers...for one critical part in particular. The entire design hinges on the use of a special funnel-like device to separate liquids from solids, called a urine diverter. It's actually somewhat comical, in that the author laundry-lists all the supplies that are needed, and the vast majority really are common hardware, but stuck in the middle of this mundane list is "urine diverter"...as if you could find such as item just anyplace. Actually, my quick internet search only revealed one supplier for the item - in the UK, and not particularly cheap, either. Providing some supplier information, as well as some alternative designs for making your own diverter (out of a large funnel perhaps, or an upside down, thick plastic jug, or...?) would be helpful, and would add a lot to the usefulness of the remainder of the content, given that the project cannot be built without this item. More information on the type of storage buckets to use would also be handy; there is no way that a normal 5 gallon bucket is going to fit in the height provided by the average chest cooler.

Lastly, in actual fact, the design is not in the truest sense, a composting toilet...there is no special characteristic that makes it so, (such as heating, drying, rotating, etc. It is closer in design to Joseph Jenkins' "sawdust toilet" which he does not claim to be composting per se, but rather a part of a larger composting system. Jenkins literally wrote the book on this subject The Humanure Handbook: A Guide to Composting Human Manure, Third Edition, and has been refining the process for over thirty years. The main difference in the design is the diverting of urine...Jenkins says not only is this not necessary, but it is not recommended. I'd say the main reason for diverting urine in this design is because storage buckets are not removed from the container immediately, whereas in Jenkins' design, they are removed when full, and either temporarily stored elsewhere, or just put immediately in the compost pile where the actual composting occurs. This is a critical part of the process, since the intense heat created in the larger pile (>160 degrees), is vital to ensure that any harmful bacteria are killed during the process.

Anyway, to sum up, I do think that if you are interested in this topic, the author has something useful to say with his design; maybe even five dollars worth. I actually hope that he'll read this review and consider making a couple of the changes I suggest, which I believe would greatly improve the product, and hopefully lead to greater income for himself, and a better "conversion rate" in the form of follow-through for the purchaser.

**Edit - 19 Sep 12. Just wanted to add that the author advertises that he details two different composting toilet designs in this book...this is stated in the Amazon write-up, as well as in the book itself. Alas, only a single design is discussed in any way. This is an oversight, I assume, but given the slim content of the book to start with, a second design would not only fulfill the advertised promise, but also make the purchase price more worthwhile.

blah blah blah

If the book's title is about composting toilets, one would think it would be the main subject. This book needs a table of contents so one can skip to building a toilet. It is my understanding composted human waste should not be put on veggies due to heavy metals and parasite potentials. Not sure if garden in this book means flowers or veggies. I wouldn't take the risk of putting it on my food crops. Flower garden use would be good. There is definitely some exaggeration going on in the book. Pretty sure drilling 100,000,000 holes is not even possible for a diy project.

Nietzsche: A Very Short Introduction, by Michael Tanner

With his well-known idiosyncrasies and aphoristic style, Friedrich Nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. Michael Tanner's introduction to the philosopher's life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings and explodes many of the misconceptions that have grown in the hundred years since Nietzsche wrote "do not, above all, confound me with what I am not!"

The Will to Brevity...
By ewomack
No one can reasonably expect to sum up Nietzche's views and philosophy in under 100 pages. The reader should not go into this work expecting to come out understanding Nietzsche, but maybe make him a little less obscure or receive a slight bit more context in which to read Nietzsche's books. For those who have already read some Nietzsche and are left nonplussed, this tiny book may help you out as well (it did me).
The book follows Nietzsche's publications more or less in chronological order. The longest and most difficult chapter is the one on "The Birth of Tragedy." This work gets the most attention of all of Nietzsche's works, presumably because it is easier to "sum up" or encapsulate than any of his other works. For instance, the section on "The Genealogy of Morals" will leave you wondering what the book is about (in fact, reading the book itself may also have this effect - it's a tad difficult).
"Morality and its Discontents" is one of the most illuminating chapters, and will shed some light on Nietzsche's proclamation that "God is dead" which is probably his most infamous and misunderstood concept (there's also a lot more meat to it than the eternal recurrence and the Ubermensch, which Tanner points out).
Overall I agree with Tanner's assessment of Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zarathustra." It was the first book of his I read, and I came out of the experience energized, but I had no idea why. "Zarathustra" is a passionate but potentially misleading read. It's nothing like his other works, and introduces concepts that never come up again, though they seem to be of utmost importance in the context of the book (i.e., the eternal recurrence, Ubermensch, and the will to power - at least in his published works).
The pace of Tanner's book quickens and the delineation of Nietzsche's texts becomes more and more sparse towards the final few chapters. There is very little information about Nietzsche's insanity, or Lou Salom or even the details of his life. The book is almost completely dedicated to Nietzsche's philosophy. In fact, the book ends as abruptly as Nietzsche's own sane life must have. There's a slight feeling of "so what's next?!?" at the end of the last and shortest chapter that discusses the works of 1888 in a flash.
Nietzsche is a huge subject, and his books are thick conceptually if not physically. He was a thinker that wanted to teach us to think differently, which makes him a valuable read no matter what your stance on the views he covers. This minute book will help you peek through the keyhole of this enormous and overwhelming subject.
Lastly, Richard Wagner figures hugely in Nietzsche's work. Knowing more about Wagner will only elucidate some of Nietzsche's works and concepts. Tanner also supports this view.

Grandiloquent Slog
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
If, like me, you struggle with Nietzsche's almost self-consciously opaque writings, Michael Tanner would like to offer his services as a Virgil to guide you through this particular tangled wood. A noted Nietzsche scholar, Tanner's years of immersion in the field help dispell common myths that have accrued to the Great Man's name. But unfortunately, he often falls prey to the same limitations that make Nietzsche's own books such a tough slog.

Tanner starts with a brief overview of Nietzsche's life. Not much of one, though. Tanner demonstrates little interest in Nietzche as a person, limiting such intrusions to where we absolutely need them to understand his subject's thoughts. Though I tend to see the producer and the product as a piece, Tanner would rather respect Nietzsche himself, who explicitly disagrees.

From there, Tanner moves through the canonical texts, mainly (though not exclusively) in chronological order. His in-depth analyses clarify at least the earliest texts. Tanner is remarkably forthright, pointing out contradictions and elisions that the author evidently missed or ignored in his own work. He even points out places where Nietzsche made points just one time in his early books, then took it for granted that we'd remember his intent for the rest of his career.

But as the subject matter gets more intense, Tanner's writing becomes more elliptical. He lapses into the same grandiloquent academese that makes Nietzsche such tough sledding for lay readers. I can't make heads or tales out of some passages, even after multiple readings. I suspect Tanner can't either, at least on the evidence of a particularly dense paragraph about halfway through, which Tanner concludes by essentially throwing his hands in the air and sighing, "That, at any rate, is how I understand it, and him."

Tanner has simplified certain points about Nietzsche for me. I now understand some of my own reading mistakes, not least my own desire to find through-lines which don't exist, and starting in later books without the prior assumptions Nietzsche expects me to bring from earlier texts. But in terms of actually understanding the conclusions and resolutions I ought to gain from the books, I'm only marginally wiser than when I started out. Perhaps I'm naive, but I expect "A Very Short Introduction" to be more introductory, and less jargon-rich, than this.

Interesting -- but not a good introduction for newcomers to Nietzsche
By Robert Moore
This brief book on Nietzsche contains many good things, though I'm pretty confident that it is not a very good introduction to his thought. Twenty years ago when I was studying philosophy in grad school I read through most of Nietzsche's works at one time or another and delved fairly deeply into the secondary literature. I picked this up as something of a refresher, but was quite surprised at what a poor job it did at explaining and summarizing what Nietzsche said and why he said it. The book's main interest comes from its analysis of where Nietzsche's thought fails to maintain coherence as well as some misunderstandings of his thought by various scholars. The book is useful as a corrective and at pointing out where Nietzsche sometimes fails to make sense, but this is pretty far down the list of books that I would recommend as an introduction. As such, it is one of my least favorite of the books that I've read in Oxford's Very Short Introduction series.

Even if one thinks that much of what Nietzsche says, however important it may be despite that, ultimately fails to be coherent, it is essential before saying why what he says is wrong, to say as clearly as possible what it is that he does say. The problems become pretty early in the book. The summary of THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY is patchy and barely explains -- which is what one would expect in an introduction -- the contrast between the Dionysian and the Apollonian. Tanner nicely explains Nietzsche's idea that suffering is the central fact of human existence, but the content of many of his books is left something less than clear. Worst of all, Tanner -- despite in the final section of the book writing that he assumes that everyone will grasp how much he admires Nietzsche -- doesn't make clear why Nietzsche is important. He doesn't explain precisely why Nietzsche is regarded as one of the most important thinkers of the past two centuries.

In short, I do not think that this is a good first book for those wanting to explore Nietzsche's thought. The truth is that while there are several excellent books on Nietzsche, most of these are for people who are already familiar with at least some aspects of his work. There is one book that I would recommend as a first introduction, R. J. Hollingdale's intellectual biography. The problem with that one is that it is only available in a ridiculously high priced paperback (I own what was in the 1980s a very reasonably priced paperback). Hollingdale, Nietzsche's most important translator into English after Kaufmann, writes clearly and sympathetically about Nietzsche. Like Tanner I am not a fan of Walter Kaufmann's famous work on Nietzsche. Like Tanner I am a big fan of Alexander Nehamas's book, but it is definitely not an introductory work. Possibly the best secondary work after Hollingdale to find a way into Nietzsche may be THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO NIETZSCHE. It is not any cheaper than the Hollingdale book, but it is a book not useful exclusively to beginners. I have not read Safranski's biography, but that is a book that I would investigate if I were a beginner. But perhaps the best approach is simply to plow through Nietzsche's books. I think what Tanner suggests about the best way to read THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY holds true for most (though perhaps not for the late works written during his last year of sanity) of Nietzsche's books: read through quickly the first time to get a sense of the overall shape and form of the book. Then read it through slowly and carefully a second time. Nietzsche is a difficult thinker, not least because he is almost intentionally messy. He makes sudden and surprising transitions apparently unrelated to what has gone before and it is often difficult to grasp what he is talking about. Despite this, he is a brilliant writer, often writing breathtaking passages, with many unforgettable sentences. However one is introduced to his thought, he repays the effort.
