Greene is the author of The 48 Laws of Power (1998), a compilation of quotes from throughout history that prescribe methods of obtaining and wielding power. He now adds seduction to the mix of stratagems for those who feel the need to scheme to get what they want. Given the popularity of so-called reality-based television programs, it is clear there is a large audience of such people. Greene, again providing quotes on his topic from philosophers, scientists, playwrights, and novelists, examines "the achievements of the greatest seducers throughout history" and profiles 10 seductive archetypes. Although the tactics Greene advises may be distasteful to some, his literary survey is fascinating. As was Greene's previous work, this one is billed as "A Joost Elffers Production." Elffers is identified--with no hint of embarrassment--as a book "packager." A "quote" from a Newsweek review of The 48 Laws is used to hype the new book, though the actual article in which the quote appeared challenged Greene's credentials as an editor and playwright and offered only lukewarm praise. The Art of Seduction: more than manipulation

Hmm. I feel like a lot of the negative reviews (my focus) are caught up in labeling this book somehow misogynistic and manipulative at its core. And I certainly agree to an extent: the language that Greene uses is definitely suggestive of manipulation and in many ways focuses on upsetting the power balances that naturally occur in relationships. But I think that those who focus on this point entirely are very cynical. In our modern age, we have lost touch with art. We have lost touch with patience. Even writing this review was a matter of pointing, clicking - and I am running more on a general feeling here than I am attempting to make careful points.

So, to answer to those who labeled this book dangerous, misogynistic, manipulative, superficial, etc., I'd like to make a few points. Greene is careful to explain that "the art of seduction" originates in the feminine mystique, and that men have adopted it because they recognize the great power that it holds. So, good job ladies. Sure, society still has a ways to go in order to truly honor any REAL notion of equality between genders, but if you see a man reading this book, it is because he is trying to master the art that originated in the depths, mysteriousness and natural power of femininity. (And besides, how difficult is it to seduce most men? Many of us are simple creatures.) The arguments about misogyny also seem to originate in our societal attitudes towards sex - but this book is not about how to get laid. Certainly, sexual interactions play a role in seduction, but this book is more about how to win people over.

Now, the manipulative part. The language in this book certainly suggests that manipulation is really they key to seduction. Greene labels the seduced "victims" and "targets", etc. But here's the thing, in my humble opinion: our society is excessively individualistic. We have all been socialized to think of how to "get what we want". And look at the TREMENDOUS deficit in emotional capital that we find in Western society... This book does not talk about seduction in terms of magically forcing people to do what you want. It talks about LEARNING HOW TO FULFILL THE NEEDS OF OTHERS in order to GREATLY increase your personal seductive allure. According to Greene (and for the sake of argument only) seduction is about learning to be more focused on the other person than ourselves. It is a reality that EVERY last one of us has needs, and to a large extent it would seem that altruism is an ideal that is beyond the grasp of humanity as a whole. Period. Whether it is a woman chasing security, or a man seeking gratification, we ALL have needs that long to be fulfilled. Those whom Greene labels as the MOST anti-seductive are the people who think exclusively of their own needs. What if your need is to find the woman of your dreams, and because of your deep love, keep her in your life? Well, this book suggests ways to keep the mystery and spark that we ALL love in a relationship alive and burning. Are there people out there with far shallower needs than are bred by the lofty ideals of love? Absolutely, most of us included (if we really take a good look at ourselves in the mirror). The manipulative language in this book, is perhaps, an effort by Greene to seduce the reader. He appeals to our self interest by labeling those we wish to seduce as targets and victims, and then proceeds to teach us how to step into the mind and heart of that "victim" in order to find creative ways to fulfill the desires of that person. What you do with that knowledge and power will determine whether you are a manipulative scumbag/gold-digger, or a person who is simply trying to improve your social interactions with NOT ONLY the gender of your preference, but people in general.

What I was most struck by in this book was the chapter on "the Anti-Seducer". This chapter really forced me to look at some of my behaviours and to realize, that ultimately, I am acting a large part of the time out of selfishness. My failures in the relationship realm come down to selfishness. But Greene has helped me understand where that selfishness is simply a real need to move forward with my life, or an utter inability to empathize with others. I would venture that most of us have problems with recognizing the distinction in ourselves and others' behaviours.

The book is easy to read and intriguing, and surprisingly enough seems to work. It's a long read, so I would recommend taking notes on anything you find particularly interesting for your own review at a later date, just as a refresher. That's enough of my windbaggery! Hope you all find what you're looking for.

The Authoritative Treatment of this Subject

I still have over a hundred pages to go, but I think I'm far enough in to give a valid assessment. My main criticism at this point is that it is longer than it needs to be. I've been working my way through this for what feels like months now. At 400+ pages it is a somewhat ponderous read. The author uses voluminous references to literature and world history to illustrate his points about various aspects of seduction. A number of the same stories are repeated in different contexts throughout the work. It is an entertaining read, but I found that I could only take so much at a time before I felt like I was getting bogged down and had to take a break and read something else. As a primer, if you are trying to learn things to be a more effective suitor, I found the wealth of material to be a bit overwhelming to take it all in and retain. So many different approaches and character types are covered. It is the most authoritative and exhaustive treatment of this subject I have seen. I think he deliberately uses inflammatory language for effect, such as calling the target of one's affections a victim. In a number of places he says that you are really learning to give people what they want, so you have to learn to be less self-centered and reactive, which is a good thing.

Depends on Your Perspective.

Upon reading several reviews here on this book, I completely understand why one may think it's manipulative.. Then there are others who view it oppositely like myself. I'm more than halfway through the book right now and as I have been going about my day I actually feel less "self-absorbed" as the book mentions this several times. How selfless is that? If you look at it in those terms, which is how I CHOSE my direction during this amazing read. Robert Greene is a realist which is what people seem to be afraid of and shy away at times. It shows in his writings which may turn off people. Just like any philosophy, not everything is to be taken to heart. Everyone can certainly apply some of this information and make it their own. It is NOT exclusive to the opposite sex either. It's applicable in life, business, sales, developing new friendships etc. while Robert Greene is my favorite author, I will still not necessarily apply Everything from his books nor agree with everything 100%. Make it your own!

About the Author
Jerry Klinke has written and illustrated many publications on industrial crane and rigging operations. Having been involved with rigging and crane operations since 1976, his background and field experience are the foundation for his published works. His career in the Nuclear Power Industry as both a Field Supervisor and later as a Training Instructor has gained him respect with craftsmen of all disciplines. Jerry has been developing and teaching rigging-related courses for more than 30 years and is a founding member of the Association of Crane and Rigging Professionals (ACRP), is on the Board of Directors, and has been involved with the operation of the organization since its creation in 1995. He has also served on several Rigging Task Force committees for the Crane Institute of America and the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), assisting them in their efforts to provide uniform qualification certifications and examinations to meet today s workplace requirements. He is a frequent speaker on rigging training and the standardized testing and qualification of crane operators, riggers and signalmen.

Great insight

Definately a worthwhile purchase if you are a crane operator or Rigger. Some very helpful information regarding some aspects of the craft that you could easily miss or forget, fortunately the book is small enough to fit in your back pocket so you can have it on you at all times during your job!

A truly inspiring story that makes you think about how little the elderly are truly thought about in today's society. Everyone needs to read this book in order to open their eyes on how the so called "Justice System" treats the people that need their help the most. The author states that one day it could be you that gets a pill shoved down your throat and drained of your life's hard work; in order for the ones that are supposed to protect you to become even more filthy rich than they already are. By reading this book at least you'll be able to spot it coming and find ways to protect yourself; because no one else is.

Fantastic book, did not want to put it down.

If you are looking for a book that inspires you and helps you find your inner strength and super power, this is the book you have been looking for. I have been looking for all kinds of self-improvement and self-discovery books and was fortunate to have The Little Book of Big MOJO by Keisha Gallegos come up in my search. Her no nonsense approach to finding what has been holding you back and ways to get you moving forward again is incredibly refreshing. I would highly recommend going through the exercises in this book as they were very helpful. The different chapters on what some of your Mojo killers are was very insightful and I can't wait to put what I have learned from her book into practice. This is one of those books that you sit down to read and don't want to put it down.

Reading this book was like spending a day with a girlfriend! I laughed out loud and had many lightbulb moments! Keisha has a rare gift of making the self help genre enjoyable and useful! Nothing about this book is boring or preachy! If you are having trouble finding your MOJO, or even if you just need a little boost in your day, read this book! You will learn a lot about yourself and have a good time doing it!

This book is so REFRESHINGLY REAL for a self-coaching book and I highly recommend it! It’s not full of platitudes and hollow advice bellowed down at you from the mountaintops by some self congratulating guru who pretends to have it all figured out. There is a REAL woman writing this book and she knows what’s up here down on planet earth!! Hallelujah! In reading this book, I felt I had a friend and ally who deeply understands what it’s like to feel lost and completely uncertain about who you are and what you have to offer.

She distills the process of discovering your unique MOJO (Magical Original Joyful Offering) into really easily digestible chapters full of stories about her own experiences and her clients over many years of life coaching and incorporates FUN exercises that you actually want to DO! [P.S. Get ready for some impactful insights to be uncovered with them. I found Chapter 12’s look into MOJO Killer #5 “It Is What It Is” about areas in your life where you are “settling” to be particularly stirring and profound for me.]

The way she supports you along the road of self-discovery in her enchanting way also feels empowering because while imbued with humor and levity, she has the balls to acknowledge a really important thing that may be affecting you on the road to self-discovery - depression!! (Hello!?) I’m SO grateful she devotes a whole chapter to this with such honesty and compassion because, let’s face it, if you are having trouble figuring out your way in this world you have probably been ensnared in the grip of depression on some level. So, with that included, it’s like she really sees and “gets” all of what may be affecting you in this struggle to find your MOJO and has you covered!

A must have resource!

Probably the best energy efficiency book I've ever bought. Liked the third edition so much last spring and bought it then, even though I knew the 4th edition was coming out in the fall (and I bought it too). Clear, beautifully illustrated with great explanations of sometimes more complex topics. A great reference for not only architects, but engineers also (like me). A must have for anyone interested in sustainable design.

A Decent Primer

This is a decent undergraduate level resource. It is a functional primer on many of the basics of sustainability including shading principles and heat transfer. The author encourages an improved understanding of many natural principles which were neglected in twentieth century building design. Interestingly, I have no desire to live in an elevated Japanese paper house in the hot humid climate of Chicago, and see a great deal of merit in mechanical cooling in hot humid climates. Never the less I think its a laudable goal for many of us to come to terms with these "natural" ways of dealing with climate.

Neil Tyson takes over for Carl Sagan IMO by making complex subjects simple and interesting

This is my first book by Neil Tyson and I was elated to find his writing style similar to Carl Sagan's. Of course it's a little different than Carl's because they are different people - but the main point is that Neil does the same fantastic job that Carl Sagan did in making complex subjects refreshingly simple but fascinating.

...A big part of this is providing (often ingenious) examples for every point that the 'average layman' might need in order to make the text crystal clear and interesting to read.

Neil Tyson's "Origins" - just like most of Carl Sagan's books - I devoured as fast as I could. It gave me but another viewpoint of an obviously gifted astrophysicist and writer's view of the evolution of the cosmos.

The New Carl Sagan

Neil deGrasse Tyson, heir apparent to Carl Sagan's Cosmos, is a gifted storyteller. His account of the origins of the Universe & everything in it makes for enjoyable reading. He has a knack for making an easy explanation of the Universe's myriad of mysteries, including the Big Bang, how stars, galaxies, & planets form, & also how the search for exoplanets is conducted. Tyson reminds me so much of Sagan, whose work I've also enjoyed - his friendly manner, ability to captivate his audience, a distinct speaking style, & a clever wit. Oh, & handsome too!

Invaluable and exhaustive

A very good book. I know those who think evolution and astrophysics is nonsense will not like a book like this, but I think most Amazon buyers are well enough educated to understand the difference between religious myth and science. Tyson explains the science (I am a geologist) in a way that is readily understandable and easy to follow. Astrophysics is a tough subject, but he explains it well.

Good content but kindle presentation is not great

I bought the kindle version of this book a couple of months ago and so far I've only read about 30% of it.
The reason for this is partly that I've not committed enough time to it but also because I've found the Kindle version a bit like driving without knowing how far you're going and no map to get there.
As others have said, there's no table of contents. I wouldn't have thought that to be such an issue but when you can't refer to a list of section headings you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. I've studied other, more technical, kindle version books and I've started to realise how much I refer to the contents. It gives me a sense of how much subject matter I've covered, have I a particularly big topic coming up that I should attack when I've more time or maybe a short topic coming up that will feel like a quick win in terms of overall progress.
I would also like to see numbered headings, I found that I was never quite sure if I was starting a subtopic or a new chapter. The headings are just not clearly distinguished enough from each other. That's really just an extension of my issue with the table of contents though.

With all that said, I've found the content reasonably clear (after going over it for the second or third time in some cases) and yes, the analogies are helpful (though maybe a little patronising, but then maybe that can't be helped when making basic concepts as easy as possible).
I've a feeling I'll have to start this again, this time taking notes, but the content is all there and understandable. I just need to remember all the headings, sub-headings and points of note so that I can refer back to them when a term crops up again.

I would imagine the paperback is a little easier to work with but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
Either way, I would recommend this book but with a word of caution for the kindle version, that you know the layout could be better

Just got back from my exam center - passed with an 90% using only this book and some practice exams for study material. I studied over the course of approximately 8-10 hours using these materials in the 2 days before my exam. Like another reviewer, I found the Skillport lessons my company provides to be quite useless in the ITIL arena.

I always try to allocate my star-ratings based on the product itself, rather than the packaging, text-digital conversion, customer service, etc... since those factors can vary and do not truly represent the product. Since Amazon doesn't provide multiple criteria for review, I think it's unfair for a book to receive poor marks due to a shoddy Kindle conversion. I give the book content 5/5 stars, and the Kindle Conversion (Fire) 4/5 stars.

Regarding Content: This book covers all of the items needed to pass the ITIL 2011 Foundations Exam in sufficient detail. Sections are organized around the ITIL Core Volumes. Each core volume has an overview and a section on processes. At the end of each section there are 6-10 practice questions with answers in the back of the book. I noted above that I used some practice exams from a different source as well, but I am confident that I would have achieved the requisite 65% score using only this book.

Regarding Kindle Conversion: There existed in the Kindle version the typical signs of a text-digital book transfer: misspellings, incorrect words, multiple choice errors, etc... but this was not by a long shot the worst I've seen. Most of the errors are easily spotted and chalked up to lazy editing (do they not have spell check for these conversions??), and there were not many of them to boot. *****As others have noted, there is no table of contents in the Kindle version. I easily remedied this by adding a bookmark to the beginning of every major section - a very quick and simple solution as you read through.***** Apart from that, this conversion was decent. I read it on the Fire, and all the images were double-tappable for expansion and consumption. All in all, not perfect, but still a 4/5 considering how easily the table of contents problem was to fix. Plus, at $10, it's hard to argue - it's rare to see a textbook on Kindle so far below the print price. Hopefully that's an example other publishers will begin to follow.

A Good Foundation

After taking three online SkilSoft courses provided by my employer and understanding nearly none of it, I picked up this book. It helped me understand the different elements of ITIL and how some of the pieces fit together. I don't know that I would depend on it for my total preparation for the exam, which I sat for and passed today. If all you wanted to do was learn more about ITIL, this is a good book for that. I picked up another book (not this author's) that was purely test questions. I'll review it next.

This is a good solid book for understanding the ITIL, and it will provide a basis for test preparation.

A couple of items
1) The author goes on in the intro pretty strongly about how he really needed a good editor. Even after finding one, he still has grammatical and punctuation errors sprinkled throughout.

2) The author uses a story line about a restaurant chain, which he progressively adds to with each new chapter; however, he never goes back and makes the connection to ITIL. So be prepared to wonder about that, and if you go back to attempt to put the pieces together, you'll get no verification from the author that your thinkin' ain't stinkin'.

Finally, know this: The test itself has grammatical errors including sentences that stop in the middle of a thought and pick up at the end of another. If you want this certification, live with it. I have several technical certifications, instructional certifications, a project management certification, and an MBA. This was a difficult test because of the grammar and the terminology, which is based on the "Queen's English" (British English). Americans, take note. It ain't easy. This book will help but will not be the total answer.

Again, a good solid book to understand the ITIL. It will give you a good foundation.
