Now the older disciplines of detection theory and coding theory have been generalized and applied to the point where it is hard to tell where these end and the theories of signal design and modulation begin. Despite our emphasis on the events of the last ten years, we have included all the traditional topics of digital phase modulation. Signal space concepts are developed, as are simple phase-shift-keyed and pulse-shaped modulations; receiver structures are discussed, from the simple linear receiver to the Viterbi algorithm; the effects of channel filtering and of hardlimiting are described. The volume thus serves well as a pedagogical book for research engineers in industry and second-year graduate students in communications engineering. The production of a manageable book required that many topics be left out.

About the Author

Founder and publisher of Menasha Ridge Press, Sehlinger lives in Birmingham, Alabama, where he enjoys mountain biking and playing the drums.

Johnny Molloy is an outdoor writer based in Johnson City, Tennessee. He has averaged over 100 nights in the wild per year since the early 1980's, backpacking and canoe camping throughout the country. He has written numerous hiking and tent camping guides for the southeastern states, Wisconsin and Colorado.

A must have for the state of KY. The definitive guide to our state. Use is probably 30 times a year. Shows all put-ins and take-out as well as what the water levels should be as well as what you will encounter along the way. Buy it.

Impressed with it so far. We shall see once i start hitting up these rivers. Put in/Take out are present. Only thing I would like is more pictures of the rivers and possibly a map of each section/subsection of rivers.

This is one of the best "CFO" books, together with "CFO Architect" and "CFO Handbook". A little bit overpriced - I would have put it in the US$60 range. Reading this book is like taking an advanced course in preparing yourself for the CFO career. It is very didactic and straightforward. A recommendation for the author: in a future edition, you might consider expanding on the topics of international finance, value based management and corporate restructurings.

Never been so displeased with a textbook.

To say I was disappointed with this book would be a complete and total understatement. I only gave it 1 star because I had to put at least 1, but I definitely would have put zero if it were allowed. Nearly half of the book was missing and it was very important pages that I actually really needed. I had to borrow a friend or my teacher's book almost daily (good thing she was nice about it). I ended up failing my lab final because I physically didn't have the material to study. Lesson learned: NEVER BUY LOOSE LEAF BOOKS USED. Will never make that mistake again.

This slim satirical volume purports to map the road to world (or at least great) power from childhood to the grave. Send-ups of everything abound, from pop psychology questionnaires such as "Have You Got What It Takes?" and lists of "Career Paths" (salesman being ideal, since it teaches how to lie with a straight face). After advising on how to seize power, by force or fraud, the tips then cover designing a national flag, managing money while gaining as little of it as possible honestly and arranging your love life so that it enhances your respectability. (This means that your wives and mistresses never meet.) There is even a guide for retirement, should one live so long. The historical snippets have much the same tone, although the portrayals of kids torturing animals to prepare for tyranny and the distinctly Third World flavor of the dictators may not strike everyone as funny. Others may more mildly object to bracketing Elizabeth I of England with Attila the Hun and the Bertelsmann conglomerate with the Mongols. The latter is an insider nod to de Guillaume's alter ego, unacknowledged in the text or on the jacket copy: when not aspiring to thrones, de Guillaume is called Andrew Wilkins, and serves as publisher of Australian Bookseller & Publisher.

"How to Rule the World" provides a tongue in cheek manual of how to tackle world domination. Anyone with even a lukewarm understanding of any dictators and dictatorships in past can find many parallels between any chosen dictator, or regime, and the themes found in the book. After having read many long and sometimes laborious studies of both Hitler and Stalin, this book provided a concise and also entertaining view of dictators such as these. Although one may laugh at suggestions made here, I found many practical comparisons, such as Stalin's control and manipulation of the media and also the out of proportion measures taken to erect statues and monuments, posters and photographs to show power and dominance. The most humorous measure, providing understanding of the garments chosen by many dictators, is the section regarding dictator dress. The suggestion to wear a military uniform, even if one lacks military experience, to display power explains why both Stalin and Hitler donned a military dress while each lacked in significant, and successful military leadership roles. The book also provides small snippets of historical information providing information relevant to a former dictator displaying the qualities focused on a particular subject matter. All in all, what the book lacks in seriousness, it makes up for in pure entertainment quality all the while filling the reader with useful information. I was left with a deeper understanding of the dictators I had previously spent months learning about, buried in dense historical writings. Highly recommended as supplemental material or a fun afternoon read.

A fun and quick read!

How to Rule the World is a very entertaining book. It accurately speaks about the way in which to become a dictator, but in a humorous way. It also highlights dictators that have been and speaks about their strengths and weakness in order to teach the reader how to avoid the mistakes of those before them. It speaks about the dictator in a way that makes it very easy to understand that even a young child could understand some of the points the author is trying to get across. If you are interested in dictatorships and how they are able to come about this is a great book to read due to it's accuracy and how easy it is to read. At the end the author speaks about his own failed attempts towards "ruling the world", whether or not it is a true story is highly questionable.

Fun, intelligent, hilarious! Loved it.

This is one of those satires that emulate self-help books but tackles a completely incongruous subject. It reminds me of Daily Show's "America: The Book" and is of almost equivalent quality in its writing. The book leads you on a "teaching course" about how to become a tyrant. It's both witty and wise, and I laughed outloud quite often. A bonus is short history lessons about world-famous tyrants. The drawings are amusing too. It's considerably better than "How to Be A villain" which I read lately, although unfortunately not as visually attractive (thought the drawings are pretty cute- they should have reconsidered the cover though, "How to be A Villain" had a cover that screamed "pick me up!") All in all I think this book deserves more success than it probably had. Recommended.

useful for material research

While fractals have proven of great use in computer graphics, this text instead looks at how to apply these ideas to physical observations. There is an emphasis on diffusion limited growth processes, as on solid surfaces, for example.

Fluid phenomena are also studied. Like the formation of viscous fingers between two fluids. Also of interest is how Meakin shows that long range persistence can arise out of localised interactions. Considerable space is devoted to studying diffusion limited aggregation, because of the importance of this model in many systems.

Overall, quite a worthy book for a materials researcher. The math and computer simulations is well developed but clearly understandable.
