About the Author
Eric Ambler was born into a family of entertainers and in his early years helped out as a puppeteer. However, he initially chose engineering as a full time career, although this quickly gave way to writing. In World War II he entered the army and looked likely to fight in the line, but was soon after commissioned and ended the war as assistant director of the army film unit and a Lieutenant-Colonel. This experience translated into civilian life and Ambler had a very successful career as a screen writer, receiving an Academy Award for his work on The Cruel Sea by Nicolas Monsarrat in 1953. Many of his own works have been filmed, the most famous probably being Light of Day, filmed as Topkapi under which title it is now published. He established a reputation as a thriller writer of extraordinary depth and originality and received many other accolades during his lifetime, including two Edgar Awards from The Mystery Writers of America (best novel for Topkapi and best biographical work for Here Lies Eric Ambler), and two Gold Dagger Awards from the Crime Writer's Association (Passage of Arms and The Levanter). Often credited as being the inventor of the modern political thriller, John Le Carre once described Ambler as 'the source on which we all draw.' A recurring theme in his works is the success of the well meaning yet somewhat bungling amateur who triumphs in the face of both adversity and hardened professionals. Ambler wrote under his own name and also during the 1950's a series of novels as Eliot Reed, with Charles Rhodda. These are now published under the 'Ambler' umbrella.

Fun.
By Mark Richardson
Good fun. Not as complex as Judgment on Deltchev or as evocative of a past time as many early Ambler books, and the love story is pale compared to A Kind of Anger, but written with characteristic wit and panache.

Ambler in decline?
By Amazon Customer
Unfortunately, Mr.Eric Ambler's late-career novel 'Charter to Danger'
lacks the crisp plotting and surprising plot twists of earlier examples of his
pre-war work like 'A Coffin for Dimitrios' (1939) or his delightful post-war
heist novel 'The Light of Day' (1962). The latter was made into a film with Peter
Ustinov as the hapless anti-hero Arthur Abdel Simpsom that is well worth watching.
As a fan of Mr. Ambler who has read his novels over and over again, I found this
particular book's plotting to be mechanical and rather insipid. While one finds
oneself in sympathy with the staunchly upright hero, this book is, quite frankly,
dull, boring and contrived. I hope that the next book of his that I'm about to
read, 'The Levanter', will prove to be a better example of his craft.
In sum, this book was disappointing.

Review
In Newsweek magazine, Dr. Drew Pinsky named Melody Beattie's Codependent No More one of the four essential self-help books available today, calling it the "grandaddy of addiction tomes."

"Melody Beattie is an American phenomenon....She understands being overboard, which helps her throw best-selling lifelines to those still adrift."
--TIME

About the Author
Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children and freelance author and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs."There were many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted," Beattie said. "Even though I was sober, I didn't know how crazy I could get until it happened to me." Twenty publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. "It's a good idea, but we don't think there's that many codependents out there," they wrote back.Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. Codependent No More has now sold 3.5 million copies. Beattie has since written nine more books, five for major publishing houses on the east and west coasts. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare department. Beattie has appeared in the pages of Newsweek and People and has been a regular guest on Geraldo and Oprah. Playing It By Heart is Beattie's first original book for Hazelden since 1990; the book is a return to her recovery roots that first brought her national recognition.

From AudioFile
For twenty years Melody Beattie has been writing lucidly about codependency--the pattern of trying to control or change someone who repeatedly makes trouble for themselves and others, and who usually is manipulating and controlling others as well. The problem is often part of an addictive or depressive syndrome or both (which the author understands well from her own experience); the solution she offers is to work extra hard at clarifying each person's boundaries, keeping everyone's responsibilities separated, and becoming obsessive about looking after one's own interests in the face of demands to do otherwise. Christina Moore's elegant diction stirs in a measure of attention-getting gravitas to this weighty mixture of classic relationship advice. A life changer
By Amy Brooks
I know this is an incredibly cheesy thing to say, but this book changed my life. It is a simplistic yet thorough look at this disorder. Its roots, its patterns, and, most importantly, its solutions. Like many who have probably read this book, I found myself being told I was co-dependent in therapy and not understanding what exactly that meant. Beattie even touches on that vagueness in this book, admits that codependency is not well-defined. Reading this defined it for me. It clarified exactly what it was and made me understand where it came from and how to solve it. This book was where my recovery began.

I will say this: this book is somewhat about God. If you are like me, you don't care where solutions come from as long as they work. I am a Christian so for me the tone and frequent mentions of God were not really of note, but if you are sensitive to such things just know it is a part of this book although I wouldn't say it is overbearing. You can easily enjoy this and take away plenty of help without being a religious or spiritual person.

Wow.
By Erik S
I've struggled with this unknowingly for as long as I can remember. In the midst of going through the hardest thing I've ever faced; the willing letting go of the person I love more then any other human being, this has been an eye opener. Overcoming the death of a parent was tough. Overcoming addiction was seemingly impossible. They but prepared me for the insanity I just survived. I found solace and strength in my actions and this book was a pillar and beacon of hope. It is beautifully written from experience in an easy to understand language; the kind you can still read as your eyes are blurred by tears as they strike home.

Thank you. This book has helped me immensely in the arduous first steps of continued recovery, acceptance, and forgiveness of self.

If you need it, it will help you
By deelee82
After growing up with an alcoholic and (what I thought was) a narcissist, I have been carrying a ton of weight on my back. I started reading this book on Friday night after writing the Samaritans for help with suicidal thoughts. I feel like the last day and a half has brought me more peace and contentment than the years of depression/anxiety medications ever did (just my personal experience - not everyone will feel this way.) It's still "fresh" and I still need to try taking this new approach to work next week, but I FINALLY understand why I've been how I've been and that it doesn't have to be that way. Even if you're not in a relationship with an addict, this book can help you. If you're anxious, depressed, feel stuck, feel like nobody likes you, whatever - there is something to be gained from this book.

An Alternate Reality Sequel That Is Starting To Move Away From The Brilliant Premise That Hooked Me
By K. Harris
One of my favorite books of 2011 was "The Demi-Monde: Winter." Author Rod Rees took a supremely cool premise and ran with it, creating one of the most memorable action/adventure epics that I've experienced in quite some time. While not a perfect novel by any means--some of the characterizations are rather thinly drawn and I don't dare to dig too deeply into the scientific and technological aspects of the story--I can say that, for me, what I got was more than enough to compensate for any perceived shortcomings. Simply put, I loved the book. It had a relentless pace, an ingenious setting, and an intriguing historical element--all of which appealed to me immensely. When I saw that Rees had already released the second volume "Spring" in the United Kingdom, I purchased it immediately. That was how excited I was to continue the story! This is the second (called The Shadow Wars here) in a presumed four part series and, truthfully, it fell a little short of the first volume's cleverness. It is still an enjoyably dark tale, but the historical elements that distinguish "Winter" so brilliantly take a back seat in this continuation.

The concept at the heart of "The Demi-Monde" series is easily its most salient selling point. The Demi-Monde is an artificially constructed, fully immersive simulation model used to train soldiers for impending combat missions. The virtual environment has been stacked to make it extremely volatile and unpredictable with a global climate of racial, cultural, and sexist inequality and hatred. To further complicate matters, the world is filled with accurate replications of some very evil, unscrupulous, and/or notorious historical figures. From the bloody reign of the Third Reich to appearances by or mention of notables representing Robespierre, Borgia, Shaka Zulu, Marx, Trotsky, and Empress Wu among numerous other personages--the books provide a fascinating alternate reality that I simply loved. In the opener, the main plot point revolves around the president's daughter who gets trapped in this make believe, but very real, dimension. A daring rescue is plotted and an ordinary young woman must enter the Demi-Monde to navigate its dangers and find the missing girl.

"Spring" picks up moments after the prior volume ends. It follows the same basic cast of characters (with a few notable names getting short shrift) in another geographic setting, mainly Paris and Venice. The main action set piece of the first book played out in the Warsaw Ghetto as German troops move to annihilate the trapped community. The fantastical blend of factual elements with over-the-top fiction really worked and the real aspects of history provided an unexpected gravitas to an atypical adventure tale. Rees downplays this in "Spring" with little adherence to a realistic alternate timeline. He simply creates a new world where our characters interact principally with figures like de Sade, Nostradamus, Torquemada, and Doge Catherine-Sophia. Additional time is spent in the real world where another nefarious plot in underway. And inexplicably, Rees has also upped the supernatural quotient as well. In the end, it all starts to feel a bit over-stuffed.

In short, I didn't fall head over heels in love with "Spring" as I hoped to. It is still fun, but it is getting increasingly chaotic in its everything-but-the-kitchen-sink plotting. As it moves further away from its historical parallels into the supernatural realm, the series seems to losing a grasp on what made it so unique in the first place. I'll still check out "Fall," but I'm not certain that the story can get back on track. It might continue to be fun, but I wanted it to be epic. KGHarris, 2/12.

"Intense" does not begin to describe it!
By Tiffany A. Harkleroad
Dystopian life in the Demi-Monde continues, and it continues to degenerate. Norma Williams is stuck in the Demi-Monde as Aaliz Heydrich replaces her in the real world. Ella Thomas has slowly become the Messiah, and as her power grows, her baser nature takes over, turning her into a completely different being. Norma helps lead a resistance movement against Ella. And it slowly becomes apparent that the Demi-Monde is something much more than just computer simulation.

The action of the first book is ratcheted up a few notches in the second book of the Demi-Monde saga. So if book one was explosive, this book is Michael Bay-splosive. Seriously, the word intense does not even begin to cover it. The Demi-Monde continues to devolve into the very worst aspects of humanity. I found every minute fascinating.

While I have always been interested in history, I have never actually been a scholar of the subject, so a good many of the real historical characters and concepts are slightly lost on me, which is a real shame; as much admiration as I have for these books, I bet I would have much more if I knew all the references. However, the writing is incredibly clever and engaging. I love the many plays on words and the reimagining of many historical figures.

The book is full of action, history, and psychological thrills, so it will appeal to fans of many genres. Throw in some dystopia and paranormal aspects, and you have appealed to a wide variety of readers. Personally, I cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

I received a review copy courtesy of TLC Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.

well written cliffhanger
By Majestic Mustache
I recently found "The Demi-Monde: Winter" on my wife's Nook. I practically couldn't put it down, and had it finished in only 3 days. When I finished it there was still a few weeks before this one was available for purchase. Immediately I pre-ordered "The Shadow Wars," and marked the calendar. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and pace of the first book, and was thrilled that Rod Rees kept up that pace in this one, too.
Despite a fair number of new characters introduced in this story, I feel the author gave just enough info to let you know why they are significant, without providing a lot of usless details. He also goes back and lets you know briefly what happened to a couple of the main players in the plot from the first book.
This second installment is just as well written as the first, and continues to make you want to turn the next page and get more, more, more! Rod Rees does not fail to provide you with just enough suspense and surprises to keep you from guessing how thing are going to fall into place.
I would say this is one of my favorite book series I've read in years.

I searched for other titles from this author, and found a total of 5. This had me somewhat confused, so I emailed the author, fully expeecting to get someone from the publishing dept, but it turns out Rod Rees emailed me himself! From the limited communication I've had with him, he's a very nice person, he seemed happy to answer my questions, and let me know which books are available in the US. He said The Demi-Monde: Winter and The Shadow Wars are all we have here. In the UK are Winter, Spring and Summer. He also told me that I haven't missed anything by not having the UK editions, and he's just finished the final edit of Fall. I can't wait for the last two to get to me!

Why We Still Haven't Found What We're Looking For

We long for heaven, and we will never feel fully at home until we get there. This keen insight into our souls pervades the writings of C. S. Lewis. From his Chronicles of Narnia to Mere Christianity, Lewis's writings continually return to the theme of heaven as our true home, the land we have been searching for our whole lives, a place where all is finally made right and that all the joys in this life point to. With selections from The Weight of Glory, The Great Divorce, and The Problem of Pain, this collection includes some of Lewis's most beautiful and profound writing on heaven, revealing how our destinies transform every aspect of our lives.

From the Back Cover
Two of Lewis's most famous and compelling sermons have not received the attention they deserve-- "The Weight of Glory" and "Transposition." They are, in fact, grand reconceptualizations of the spiritual life. This book combines these two beautiful treatises, bringing their wisdom and insight into a whole new generation. An ideal book for those looking to go deeper after reading Mere Christianity.

Made for a Quick Buck, and why it matters to the publishers' and Walter Hooper's bank account.
By Mike London
This is yet another book in a series of publications obviously aimed at making a quick buck for the publishers. Aware that anything bearing his name will generally sell quite well, the publishers and Walter Hooper has for the past forty years being issuing posthumous works, anthologies, and throw-away publications such as this. Walter Hooper is Lewis's literary executor, and there have been some serious accusations regarding his handling of Lewis's work in the past four decades, including passing off forged work as Lewis's original work, and incorporating blatantly bad edits into already published works. MADE FOR HEAVEN is actually one in a series of repackaged books by C. S. Lewis, and are primarily aimed at people buying for college and high school graduations or other type of gifts. Rather pointless to anyone who actually reads C. S. Lewis.

Not that there's a problem with devotionals, etc. But seeing C. S. Lewis endlessly repackaged like this, long after he's dead, is getting pretty disgusting. Those wanting to get into C. S. Lewis should just go buy a box set of his books, not buy these worthless chapbooks and hodge-podge publications. If it reaches people for Christ, that's always a good thing. But as far as their intentions go, books like this feel like Hooper and the publishers are just trying to make a quick buck.

Holy words
By FrKurt Messick
C.S. Lewis was a rare individual. One of the few non-clerics to be recognised as a theologian by the Anglican church, he put forth the case for Christianity in general in ways that many Christians beyond the Anglican world can accept, and a clear description for non-Christians of what Christian faith and practice should be. Indeed, Lewis says in his introduction that this text (or indeed, hardly any other he produced) will help in deciding between Christian denominations. While he describes himself as a 'very ordinary layman' in the Church of England, he looks to the broader picture of Christianity, particularly for those who have little or no background. The discussion of division points rarely wins a convert, Lewis observed, and so he leaves the issues of ecclesiology and high theology differences to 'experts'. Lewis is of course selling himself short in this regard, but it helps to reinforce his point.

This book derives from several of his works: 'The Great Divorce', 'The Problem of Pain', and 'Weight of Glory'. With regard to the Great Divorce, Lewis here derives the title in antithesis of William Blake, who wrote of the marriage of Heaven and Hell. He also is paying tribute to that kind of literature with a long pedigree (including such luminaries as Dante) who write of a visit to Heaven and Hell. In his narrative, Lewis introduces many characters who, the reader slowly discovers, are not in Heaven because they refuse to let go of something, even something rather miniscule, of the Hell in which they find themselves. 'If we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell,' Lewis states. However, upon letting go, one finds that nothing has in fact been lost.

In 'The Problem of Pain', Lewis deals with the subject that confounds ministers, theologians and philosophers throughout the ages - why would a loving God not put an end to agony in the world? Why does an all-powerful God permit suffering? The excerpt here derives from Lewis' exposition beginning with Paul's epistle to the Romans - 'the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.' Lewis looks generally at the problem as an interplay between self, desire, experience and God. This small excerpt does not answer the question definitively, but hopefully with inspire readers to go to the primary text.

In the 'Weight of Glory', Lewis talks a lot about virtue and the style of living; we are called to live in such a way as to bring heaven as close as possible. 'Weight of Glory' is actually a sermon, which contains memorable passages that hearken back to the gospel message of seeing people as potential heavenly beings - as Jesus likened the visitation and good-deed-doing to 'the least of these' as doing so to him, so too does Lewis state that 'there are no ordinary people'; each person is a neighbour in God, and as such, a possessor of the same holiness as we are called to exhibit and as Christ embodied in the world.

This book is part of a pocket-book series being produced by Harper SanFrancisco, several books that highlight the key points of C.S. Lewis' religious/theological writing. Less than 100 pages, with plenty of white space and good-sized print, these books are easily read, but invite contemplation far beyond the scope of their diminutive size.

The proof of heaven
By C I
Lewis sneaks up on us in this work. He takes our inward longings and deepest desires and challenges our superficial conclusions and intellectual criticisms of the need for heaven and even the first blush repulsion of some images of heaven. Then he turns them on their head and speaks deeply to our souls in language and metaphor that we all secretly identify with - leading to a harsh ( at first thought ) but hopeful view of not only heaven's promise of the future, but necessity for daily living w fellow human beings.

"Wildly informative...the depth of the information and breadth of history packed into these 170 pages is astounding."
—Men's Journal

"In ancient times, farmers worried about losing precious grain to spoilage during wet winters. So they figured out how to malt grain and brew it into beer, thus preserving a nutritious source of calories. InThe Comic Book Story of Beer, due out in September, we get a graphical tour of such pivotal moments—from the cradle of agriculture to the modern-day craft beer heyday."
—Alastair Bland, NPR

"This latest hop- and barley-inspired feat certainly deserves a clinking of glasses—The Comic Book Story of Beeris something all beer, history and comic book nerds can enjoy."
—Tiffany Do, Food Republic

"Nothing less than the history of human civilization itself. This endlessly entertaining and assiduously researched chronicle spans the ages as it recounts the role of this beloved beverage in politics, art, religion, agriculture, chemistry and more. The episodic narrative is smartly explored and quite ably illustrated. For a heady splash of history that goes down quite smoothly, this book’s for you!
—Richard Pachter, Miami Herald

"With meticulous research, the authors open the readers’ minds to the possibility that beer helped shape the course of civilization, not only by sharing the provocative 'beer theory of agriculture' but showing how, in each age, beer played a significant role in helping shape human affairs. McConnell’s illustrations are a perfect accompaniment; his sometimes amusing, sometimes intriguing, and sometimes provocative visuals have all the qualities of this favorite beverage. The abundance of interesting little details in these illustrations pair well with the wealth of information that the authors provide."
—Publishers Weekly

"In tracing the history of beer, Back East Brewing Company’s Mike Smith and author Jonathan Hennessey do a convincing job of linking it to every important development in human history, from the dawn of agriculture through both world wars. The graphic format proves ideal for distilling centuries’ worth of detail into one easy-to-digest package"
—Punch

“This book covers the history of beer in easily consumable, pint-sized portions. The only thing it won’t give you is a hangover! (Although I confess that it made me thirsty enough to down several beers while reading it.) It’s a fun, funny, and enjoyable read—exactly what a book about beer should be...even though most aren’t.”
—Zane Lamprey, International Drinking Ambassador and host of Three Sheets, Drinking Made Easy, and Chug

“A well researched, entertaining, interesting, informative, and iconoclastic account of the history of beer. Everything is covered from beginnings in Mesopotamia, the Black Death, the emergence of hopped beer, and the industrialization and development of brewing science to modern craft brewing, and all is presented in a very attractive graphical form.”
—Dr. Terry Foster, beer historian, brewer, and author of Pale Ale and Brewing Porters and Stouts

“For someone who was a comic book geek before a beer geek, The Comic Book Story of Beer seamlessly melds both worlds. McConnell’s lavish art is rich and vibrant, perfectly illustrating the high points of a story as old as civilization itself. Both fun and educational, it nicely shows how beer’s story is humankind’s story.”
— Jay R. Brooks, syndicated newspaper columnist and beer writer

Excellent book!
By TBrink
Do you like beer?
Do you like graphic novels?

If you answered "yes" to at least one of those questions, then there is a good chance you will like this book.

If you answered in the affirmative for both of those questions, then what are you doing wasting your time reading reviews? You already know this book is explicitly for you. It costs the same as like 3 or 4 pints, but the upshot is that you won't be peeing the book a couple of hours later.

PROS:
--It has that awesome new book smell.
--You might learn something new about beer.
--It pairs wonderfully with beer.
--This book can be used as a Turing field test. If you encounter someone that does not like this book, then there is a high probability that they are a robot automaton with no soul.

CONS:
--Does not actually come with beer.
--You might end up writing drunken reviews on Amazon when you finish the book three beers later.
--If you're looking for a third reason to not buy this book, then congratulations, you're a robot.

It's well written, nicely researched, wonderfully illustrated, blah blah blah. Add this to your cart right now.

Amazing book on BEER!
By EJR
This is a "beerful" book! It is fantastic! It is so much fun to read this book and discover all the little historical tidbits about beer that I was not aware of at my ripe old age. Be sure to read the fine print under some of the images, for they are delightfully done. I am contemplating facilitating a course on the history of beer at our local Senior Center in the future. I plan to use this book for the basis of our study of beer, and then possibly visit four microbreweries in our area. I have been jotting down various beers mentioned in the book that I plan on finding, purchasing, and discovering. If you are interested in knowing more about beer, then this is a great book to get you into expanding your knowledge of this age old beverage.

Fun, Beautiful, Informative
By B. Anderson
Being a lifelong comic book nerd, I have read my fair share of non-fiction comics. Since they are usually published by smaller comic book companies, there is often something lacking, i.e. mediocre art or dry, uninteresting writing. This is not the case with "The Comic Book Story of Beer". Hennessey, Smith and McConnell have crafted (pun intended) something to be proud of. The art and writing both show flashes of brilliance, and the book is chock full of historical information about beer. I'm a homebrewer and an avid reader of beer-related literature, and I still learned a few things. My only problem is that I'm not sure where to shelve it in my library--with the graphic novels, or with the beer books?
