Mechanics explained

I actually got my driver's licence just before I bought this book. I want to prove my driving silks. Nobody explained the mechanics behind the gear changing before. This book did. I think I have better understanding of the cars after reading this book. I also emailed the author for some questions and he immediately replied me with explanation.

About the Author

Kathleen O'Neal Gear is a former state historian and archaeologist for Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska for the U.S. Department of the Interior. She has twice received the federal government's Special Achievement Award for ""outstanding management"" of our nation's cultural heritage.

W. Michael Gear holds a master's degree in archaeology and has worked as a professional archaeologist since 1978. He is principal investigator for Wind River Archaeological Consultants.

Together they have written the North America's Forgotten Past series (People of the Morning Star, People of the Songtrail, People of the Mist, People of the Wolf, among others); and the Anasazi Mysteries series. The Gears live in Thermopolis, WY.

Exceptional Series

The Gears have done it again. Each book of the series, including this one, kept me sitting on the edge of my chair from the first cover to the final pages. They have a way of bringing excitement and suspense into every story. I highly recommend any of the Gear's books for anyone interested in archeology, Native Americans, or just a really good story. I'ave also found that their books have parallels to what is going on in the world and in the nation, today and leave me with things to think about. I'm anxiously awaiting their next book.

I haven't finished the book yet, but as is usual with the Gears books it is a page turner. You are right there suffering with the people, rejoicing with them, understanding all that they are feeling. The Gears give you so much information about the people and the lives they live that you feel you understand exactly what it was like to live in their time period. Anyone interested in the lives of the early Americans will enjoy this book and any of the books by the Gears. At times you would like to be there and live the lives they live, close to nature and in tune with all that is around you.

Jonathan M. Borwein, FRSC is Canada Research Chair in Collaborative Technology at Dalhousie University. A Fellow of the AAAS and a foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, he received his Doctorate from Oxford in 1974 as a Rhodes Scholar and has worked at Waterloo, Carnegie Mellon and Simon Fraser Universities. Recognition for his extensive publications in optimization, analysis and computational mathematics includes the 1993 Chauvenet prize.

Adrian S. Lewis is a Professor in the School of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering at Cornell. Following his 1987 Doctorate from Cambridge, he has worked at Waterloo and Simon Fraser Universities. He received the 1995 Aisenstadt Prize, from the University of Montreal, and the 2003 Lagrange Prize for Continuous Optimization, from SIAM and the Mathematical Programming Society.

This is an excellent introductory text with a more mathematical edge. It is much better than the typical computation-based books, but is not as rigorous as some of the more technical books. It does fit a small niche, but it is neither computationally nor mathematically advanced, which is a bit disappointing.

In Subject Lessons, Sanjay Seth’s investigation into how western knowledge was received by Indians under colonial rule becomes a broader inquiry into how modern, western epistemology came to be seen not merely as one way of knowing among others but as knowledge itself.

Drawing on history, political science, anthropology, and philosophy, Seth interprets the debates and controversies that came to surround western education. Central among these were concerns that Indian students were acquiring western education by rote memorization—and were therefore not acquiring “true knowledge”—and that western education had plunged Indian students into a moral crisis, leaving them torn between modern, western knowledge and traditional Indian beliefs. Seth argues that these concerns, voiced by the British as well as by nationalists, reflected the anxiety that western education was failing to produce the modern subjects it presupposed. This failure suggested that western knowledge was not the universal epistemology it was thought to be. Turning to the production of collective identities, Seth illuminates the nationalists’ position vis-�-vis western education—which they both sought and criticized—through analyses of discussions about the education of Muslims and women.
