Odd book...

Not the typical Little Golden Book storyline. It's just odd. Each page contains a 4 line poem, few of which have anything to do with saying please and thank you. I was hoping more for instruction to the reader on how and why to say please and thank you. Not so much.

I was a little disappointed - because I though it would be more of a "story" and not the poems. My students are ages 3-5, & most of the poems were "above" them - but I was able to use a few during our "Manners Week" at school

mostly wonderful but...

Most of the poems are nice and the illustrations are vivid and interesting. My only two problems are the poem about the dirty pig girl and the sad crocodile. The last lines of the dirty pig girl poem basically say that people should not have to look at you unless you are clean and neat. The sad crocodile poem is even worse, with his friends running away from him and not wanting to talk to him because he is 'always sad'.

In my opinion, these are not lessons I want to teach my children. When reading this to my children, I take the opportunity to reinforce empathy and concern for others instead of disapproval because others are not conforming.

Beautiful novella, but this edition is unreadable due to many, many typos

By all means, buy the book, it's incredible, but don't buy this one. Hesse's words and W.K. Marriott's classic translation are butchered in this Simon & Brown printing -- "if" for "of", "nit" for "not", "heard" instead of "head" -- all in one paragraph. Yeesh.

An Old Friend Revisited

When I came upon a new translation of Siddhartha by the revered Susan Bernofsky, I was drawn to revisit this book from thirty years ago. Like many teens of the early seventies, I was affected deeply by Siddhartha. It offered me a way to find and embrace spirituality--spirituality that was more aligned with the Beatles, the anti-war movement, and my own peer culture than was my childhood Episcopalian upbringing. This new volume didn't disappoint. Bernofsky, whose translations I've long admired, pays careful attention to Hesse's musical prose and lyricism. The simple messages and Siddhartha's adventures were even more delightful that I remembered. This is a much more beautifully rendered version than the one I read in my youth. Bernofsky's mastery of German coupled with her understanding of and faithfulness to Hesse's pure and rather innocent lessons make this a refreshing read, like dipping one's feet into a cool brook on an August day. I'm glad I revisited this old friend. Siddhartha has stood the test of time. Bravo to Bernofsky, as well.

Translation is filled with grammatical errors

The layout and cover are beautifully done. Hesse's book is a masterpiece. The translation also has a kind of poetry that I suspect is close to the German, however there are a fair number grammatical errors or typos in this edition - it seems they used spell check so the typos aren't obvious, but I can't go more than a few paragraphs without having to read a sentence a few times to figure out which word was left out or spell-checked into the wrong word. 'Learned' becomes 'Leaned', 'that' becomes 'That', 'ice' becomes 'icy', 'breaths' becomes 'breathes', commas break sentences in ways that unintentionally change meaning, etc... These are just some examples from a few pages chosen at random. This problem is consistent throughout the book. There is even an instance where a question left by the translator, in German, is sitting IN THE TEXT in a sentence, which is just absurd.
