But what seemed to be death by natural causes quickly turns into a case of murder, and Carella must unravel the motivations behind the comedian’s final act.

Meanwhile, Cindy Forrest has been working to put herself through college since the sniper who held the city hostage three years ago murdered her father. But now she’s in the crosshairs, and the only thing standing between her and a killer is Detective Bert Kling of the 87th Precinct.

A pair of spellbinding mysteries full of intricate plotting and razor-sharp dialogue, Eighty Million Eyes is an Ed McBain classic, keeping the boundary-pushing spirit of his 87th Precinct series rocketing forward with gritty precision.

Amazon.com Review
Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain

I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation. He was the first writer to successfully merge realism with genre fiction, and by so doing I think he may actually have created the kind of popular fiction that drove the best-seller lists and lit up the American imagination in the years 1960 to 2000. Books as disparate as The New Centurions, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Godfather, Black Sunday, and The Shining all owe a debt to Evan Hunter, who taught a whole generation of baby boomers how to write stories that were not only entertaining but that truthfully reflected the times and the culture. He will be remembered for bringing the so-called "police procedural" into the modern age, but he did so much more than that. And he was one hell of a nice man. --Stephen King

Way back in the mid-1970s, when I was a new writer and police series were very big, my editor asked me to do a series called Joe Ryker, NYPD. I had no idea how to write a police detective novel, but the editor handed me a stack of books and said, “These are the 87th Precinct novels by Ed McBain. Read them and you’ll know everything you need to know about police novels.” After I read the first book--which I think was Let’s Hear It for the Deaf Man--I was hooked, and I read every Ed McBain I could get my hands on. Then I sat down and wrote my own detective novel, The Sniper, featuring Joe Ryker. My series never reached the heights of the 87th Precinct series, but by reading those classic masterpieces, I learned all I needed to know about urban crime and how detectives think and act. And I had a hell of a time learning from the master. Years later, when I actually got to meet Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, I told him this story, and he said, “I would have liked it better if my books inspired you to become a detective instead of becoming my competition.” Evan and I became friends, and I was privileged to know him and honored to be in his company. I remain indebted to him for his good advice over the years. But most of all, I thank him for hundreds of hours of great reading. --Nelson DeMille

About the Author
Ed McBain was one of the pen names of successful and prolific crime fiction author Evan Hunter (1926–2005). Debuting in 1956, the popular 87th Precinct series is one of the longest running crime series ever published, featuring more than 50 novels, and is hailed as "one of the great literary accomplishments of the last half-century." McBain was awarded the Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement in 1986 by the Mystery Writers of America and was the first American to receive the Cartier Diamond Dagger award from the Crime Writers Association of Great Britain.

NUMBER 21 AND STILL VERY GOOD!
By Mac Blair
Another good one by Ed McBain. This is really two stories in one book as there are two different investigations going on at the same time. One is about Stan Gifford, a TV comedian, who dies while on the screen. Was he murdered or did he kill himself? He was thought to be loved by all but it turns out many, many people connected with the show wanted him dead. Through good police work Steve Carella and Myer Myers close in on the killer. Who did the dirty deed? The other story is about Cindy Forrest and a man who shows up at her office, he won't leave and beats up the policeman who is called. She does not know who he is. Bert Kling is assigned to this case. He has had contact with Cindy in a previous book and she does not like him at all. He tries to get of the case but his LT. says no. Bert spends much time with Cindy but after he leaves her one night the man breaks into her apartment and beats her up. Bert then take off on his on investigtation to find the man. Again through very good lab work and Klings police work the man is finally found. A very good police book that explains how things work and how they are but together to come up with the right answers. In most cases you can't go wrong with McBain.

A Student's Guide to Vectors and Tensors, by Daniel A. Fleisch

Vectors and tensors are among the most powerful problem-solving tools available, with applications ranging from mechanics and electromagnetics to general relativity. Understanding the nature and application of vectors and tensors is critically important to students of physics and engineering. Adopting the same approach used in his highly popular A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations, Fleisch explains vectors and tensors in plain language. Written for undergraduate and beginning graduate students, the book provides a thorough grounding in vectors and vector calculus before transitioning through contra and covariant components to tensors and their applications. Matrices and their algebra are reviewed on the book's supporting website, which also features interactive solutions to every problem in the text where students can work through a series of hints or choose to see the entire solution at once. Audio podcasts give students the opportunity to hear important concepts in the book explained by the author.

Review
"This book is an excellent resource for science and engineering students who can use it as a quick reference while studying topics such as physics, statics, dynamics, electromagnetism, and fluid mechanics. The author is commended for his effective and elucidating style, with graphical explanations and without mathematical long-windedness. Reading specific sections in this book a priori not only serves as a just-in-time preparation, but also empowers students to tackle subjects that require a good grasp of vector algebra, vector differential operators, vector transformation, and tensors. Highly recommended."
R.N. Laoulache, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth for Choice Magazine

"This book is a short, concise teaching aid devoted to vector analysis and tensors. Each chapter ends with a set of problems whose interactive solutions can be found on a website. This is both helpful and innovative. One of the author's goals for this book is to provide in-depth coverage of covariant and contravariant tensors. This is timely, since some undergraduate physics textbooks are now using both types of tensors. Fleisch's book is an excellent and challenging resource for students in this subject area."
Albert C. Claus, physics department at Loyola University, Chicago for Optics and Photonics News

"This highly readable introductory book will be of great assistance to those taking undergraduate or graduate courses and meeting tensors for the first time"
George Matthews, AMIMA, IMA Book Reviews

Best ever
By Russell J. Barry
This book surpasses any other math/physics book I have ever read. I no longer write reviews, but for this one I will. This book actually describes the "geometric" difference between co and contra variant tensors. I have never seen this done before. I spent weeks years ago trying to figure the difference(geometrically). One is upper and the other lower incidences, so what. This book would have put me so far ahead, why did someone not do it earlier. The part on vectors is great, but the tensor part is the best I have ever seen. This book is like cheating!! Instead of banging you head on the wall one hundred times, it like some putting a pillow between you and the wall and saying just bang your head once. I am finishing string theory, having already completed general relativity and quantum field theory. I know what I am talking about. I know money is tight so I would never endorse a book that wasted money. This book puts you at the graduate level fast, again this book is like cheating.
For the prices and time saved now and later, I would have payed three times the price years ago.

NOTE: I did not do a chapter by chapter review because it was not needed. This book gives the geometric as well as the mathematical view.

Look at all the reviews around me. I found some errors in the book, but guess what the author already has the errors posted. I cannot say enough about this book. Also the solutions are posted online, you do not have to look at them but you will know if you did the problem right. This man really wants to teach. He also has videos on youtube to show you visually what is going on. I am finishing up string theory and I picked up a few new things from this book. If you understand what is going on geometrically you can understand what is going on. Tell your friends the geometric different between co and contra variant tensors, some graduate students do not know the geometric difference, try it.

Just what the doctor ordered
By RR
I have a bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering but felt lacking in Vectors and Tensors as applied to more advanced subjects. This book has helped fill in the gaps and really made a difference. It really helped strengthen my foundation in a crucial subject and now I feel much more comfortable around advanced subjects using tensors. The accompanying website is also a gem with hints to homework questions and pod-casts following the chapters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am now going to read the author's other on Maxwell's Equations for fun!

Kindle version too hard to read
By J. T. G.
Looks better, but still bad on iPad. Very tiring on kindle paper white. Math symbols not crisp, sometimes faint or misplaced (false superscripting), type face not consistent for unit vectors, etc.

Check errata. Many errors in Sec. 2.4.,and not in errata, but in general Ax(BxB) or (AxB)xB should have the second B as C. No mention that (AxB)xC = - Cx(AxB), only Ax(BxC) is explained.

I would add a few stars if the formatting was not so poor.

I understand the material; I got it to read for fun. The formatting makes it not fun.

The text begins with a fascinating history of such Asian and European lichen pigments as Phoenician purple, Roman murex, Florentine orchil, and Norwegian korkje. Consideration of Scottish, Irish, and Scandinavian domestic lichen dyes follows, as well as those used in colonial America. Also discussed at length are safe dyeing methods, with special attention to equipment and preparation of the fiber; ecologically sound dyeing techniques and the use of mordants (substances used to fix dyes); lichen identification; and more. A final section includes charts of lichen dye names and ingredients, additives and alternative mordants, international field guides, useful bibliographies, indices, and other information.
Well written, informative, and filled with expert advice, this excellent guide will be indispensable to novices and experienced dyers who wish to learn the age-old art and craft of dyeing with lichens.

Good guide, but not for complete beginners
By Amazon Customer
This is a decent guide to dying with lichens. It is a very condensed presentation of the author's academic and practical research on the topic over many years. In terms of topics considered, the book is quite varied. It begins with a preface on ethical collecting of lichens. Next comes 10 common questions about dying with lichens covering such topics as "Will lichen dyes fade?", "How many lichens does it take to dye something?", and "How can I avoid collecting rare lichens by mistake?". Following this are short chapters on the history of lichen dyes in Asian, European, and American cultures. Then there is a very practical chapter describing in detail methods and recipes for lichen dyes, together with a list of common lichens used for dyes, grouped by dye method, and specifying final colors that can be achieved. One of the author's pet topics is ecodyeing, and she has developed techniques for dying that are less harmful to the environment than traditional methods, and she devotes a chapter to describing some of her alternatives. The last full chapter covers ethics of lichen dying and lichen identification. The book ends with a 15 page annotated bibliography. There is also an index. The only photographs in the book are the ones printed inside the front and back covers.
Overall, I found this book to be clear and very well researched. I'm quite fond of lichens, but I have no background in the dyeing field. The author seems to forget how little some of her readers, such as myself, may know about natural dyes. She uses words like "mordant" without definition. Certainly, if you are already an experienced dyer, such words and their corresponding concepts will already be familiar to you. But if you are a rank beginner like myself, you might want to find another, more basic book, or seek some instruction before trying out the instructions in this one.
The author works exceptionally hard in this book to convince readers that lichen collecting for making dyes is not necessarily a bad thing. Again, she overlooks the fact that some readers may come to her book completely unfamiliar with the controversy that she is trying to argue with. To make the issues more clear for the reader, it might have been useful to lay out the arguments against collecting lichens explicitly, enumerating explicitly what kinds of environmental costs may be involved. Her advice to lichen collectors sounds valid, however. She stresses above all, looking for "found" lichens, lichens that have blown off or become detached from their substrates and are lying on the ground, or collecting from sites that have been recently logged and consequently have great quantities of detached lichens on the ground. She also cautions against lichen collecting in groups, or taking more than 10% of a single lichen species from any one location. One obvious point that she makes is that you should consider your color needs carefully before you make your dye pot- -for example, there is no need to use lichens to make a simple brown dye, since browns can be had so easily from other materials. She also points out that you don't need to fill your pot with specimens from just one species- -think about the color you are trying to achieve, and you can mix lichens of different species to get that color. If you follow her recommendations, it sounds quite plausible to be able collect lichens ethically, and using her instructions, you should have some success with your dyes.

Academic Abstract
By C. Gee
Deep and solid information, Casselman knows her lichens and seems to have devoted a lifetime to their study. That said this is a book for the trivia buff and the very serious dyer. You will learn more than you thought possible about lichens and their role in history. You will be able to dye with lichens, but you will have to have large expensive Field Guides in order to identify the lichens as in this book all you get is the Latin name. A small tome with loads of information that works witout the nasties -tin, chrome and copper

Lichen Dyes by Karen Casselman
By Catharine Gunderson
This little paperback is one of the few books for lichen lovers, and I have the author's other book. I refer to them (as well as a couple other books) whenever I am looking to lichen dye. Clearly written, and full of important information.
