About the Author
Jeff Brown, a former criminal lawyer and psychotherapist, is the author of the bestselling book "Soulshaping: A Journey of Self-Creation", among other books. Drink in this great, gorgeous, real and holy, "juicy" love!

I eagerly awaited the arrival of An Uncommon Bond both because I have great admiration for Jeff Brown's courageous voyage into dissolving the walls between spirituality and emotional healing and because I have always been a miner for great love and a believer that love is a gift that comes from the higher realms. To read his telling of the hero's journey through an experience of profound love that shakes the very foundations of his beingness is to grow more capable of the honesty, courage, humility, unconditionality, and presence needed to even begin to sustain a great love. He writes this story to move us all forward in our vision and capacity for experiencing God/All That is (whatever words that work for you) through the juicy, embodied experience of lovingly bringing ourselves ready to each other, healing into wholeness, vulnerable, present, creative and vibrantly alive.

If you are on a path of the heart, an embodied path of spiritual illumination and emotional healing into wholeness, this book is SO for you. It will not disappoint. You will be moved in your depths, subtly or not so subtly transforming your relationship to yourself and to love. I have grown; you will grow; the ones you love will grow; and the world will grow because of this book. Do not think that a love like this comes without pain, and oftentimes, it seems, without long periods of separation, as both the person who leaves and the person who is left do the necessary work to heal their fears and emotional wounds/shadow before they can truly ground such a powerful love in everyday life. Another reviewer described it as the different male and female wild inner worlds and consciousness. It is that, yet it also has Lowen and Sarah in the less stereotypic roles when it comes to who is more avoidant and who is more grasping. It would be fantastic to have a telling of the tale from the Sarah's side, as we mostly peak in on her experience through male eyes of the writer and the main character.

Imagine...if the world took to this book the way this country has taken to 50 Shades of Grey...what each of our experiences of the world could be! They are twinned opposites. 50 Shades of Grey exploiting the old power over paradigm, the armored warrior and the vulnerable maiden going into battle that causes pain and anguish, punctuated by a sexuality that is not heart centered and certainly not an expression of our connection to the Divine.

We, who are un-armoring each in our own ways, will be warmed and soothed at the hearth-fires of this extraordinary book.

disappointing

I was expecting better after seeing the poignant posts on this books Facebook page and was pretty disappointed..
Jeff obviously has great understanding of different types of relationships, being he is in the psychology speciality of work and I am in agreement with him about all the different types of relationship we are capable of having and how complicated they are .. many people do try to simplify this area of life but it is much more than meeting the love of your life and getting married.

For me the emotion was not fully conveyed with empathy and I could not feel what I was reading. Maybe the characters were not strong enough or maybe Jeff either has not fully experienced love in the way he writes of, or cannot effectively express it in writing.. I am not sure where the fault lies. There are too many unexplained disappearances of the characters, non explanation of changeable moods - the reader needs to know why these are happening to feel the emotion. Needs a plot to keep you hooked too, it seems to revolve around them going to endless yoga retreats, large parts of work-time were altogether skipped, when the emotions of mundane time apart could have been further explored. There are hardly any other characters apart from the main ones - and you didn't get to feel them as people either.

It is all a bit 2Dimensional which in no way conveys the full bodied, all absorbing feelings of Soul-mate/Soul twin relationships. It is there in words but not in feeling & rather clinical when they start discussing therapy.

However the use of Sanskrit throughout was very lovely as were the settings of the retreats. The love dictionary at the back was also beautifully explained and useful to anyone who is trying to find their way through an uncommon-bond type relationship in life.

Good training to prep for a Zoo breakout

A real page turner!!!! Couldn't put it down as I sat in my bunker, counting ammo and canning food. I have a suspicion that this book is a cover for some kind of Bigfoot capture op, but not sure. Interesting how the East German team took a lunch break in the middle of the competition - must be due to the lack of an incentive system. Sad to read about how the wife of one of the competitors was making fun of the shooting skills of her man and made the comments to another competitor...............I've been there, but on the other side - the pain is the same.

This book is quick read, I found this it informative and exciting. As a hunter and long range enthusiast, the idea of this challenge is very appealing. I felt like a participant as I read the narrative and looked at the pictures. The photos were amazing for detail on the tools of the trade and for capturing the incredible terrain. For anyone interested in long range shooting, I highly recommend this book. I would give this 6 stars if Amazon would let me.

A true delight written by a true professional.

Vowinkel really knows his stuff. I was transported back to my glory days of working with my RGR BN Sniper Teams. It helped that this book is loaded with great pictures that puts me in the field with the competitors. However, this is not a book for the Yahoo-Rambos out there. The author has too much respect for the competition, tools of the trade, safety, and people involved for that and it comes through in this book. A true delight written by a true professional.

About the Author
Arthur Waley was a distinguished authority on Chinese and Japanese language and literature. He translated many poems and novels from these languages. He was honoured many times for his work by the Chinese and received the Queen's medal for poetry in 1953. His work includes Chinese Poems, Japanese Poetry, The Tale of Genji and Monkey, the translation of a sixteenth-century Chinese novel, which was turned into a major BBC television series.

A Remarkable Book of Ancient Poetry

I devoured this book on a long-distance plane trip recently, and was amazed at the relevance of this collection of ancient, Chinese poems to modern life. Covering the time mostly between 900 B.C. and 1200 A.D., the themes these ancient poets deal with are the same most of us contemplate driving to work in the morning (if we turn off the radio), or lie with as we drift to sleep at night.
I found the poetry a little slow at first, but it gets more and more interesting the further one reads. I recommend it for the middle aged or older reader, or for anyone else who has time and inclination to seek the examined life. Food, romance, long-distance marriages and friendships, gender discrimination, the joys and frustrations of military service, the joys and frustrations of bureaucracy, fidelity, infidelity, births, and deaths, humor, sorrow -- it's all there, and speaks to us through the millenia.
A great collection at a bargain price!

A lot of humanity in these poems

The thing that impressed me most about these poems (that range in time from before the Han Dynasty up to China in the Middle Ages) is the humanity of the writers that is expressed so simply, sucinctly and eloquently. There are several poems by women which add a greater range of perspective to this collection.

Valuable insights about that which is grave and constant in the human experience. Emotions of lost love, unrequitted love and mourning are dealt with among other emotions.

Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain wants to become a writer. Trouble is, she's the daughter of a once-famous author with a severe case of writer's block. Her family--beautiful sister Rose, brooding father James, ethereal stepmother Topaz--is barely scraping by in a crumbling English castle they leased when times were good. Now there's very little furniture, hardly any food, and just a few pages of notebook paper left to write on. Bravely making the best of things, Cassandra gets hold of a journal and begins her literary apprenticeship by refusing to face the facts. She writes, "I have just remarked to Rose that our situation is really rather romantic, two girls in this strange and lonely house. She replied that she saw nothing romantic about being shut up in a crumbling ruin surrounded by a sea of mud."

Rose longs for suitors and new tea dresses while Cassandra scorns romance: "I know all about the facts of life. And I don't think much of them." But romantic isolation comes to an end both for the family and for Cassandra's heart when the wealthy, adventurous Cotton family takes over the nearby estate. Cassandra is a witty, pensive, observant heroine, just the right voice for chronicling the perilous cusp of adulthood. Some people have compared I Capture the Castle to the novels of Jane Austen, and it's just as well-plotted and witty. Cassandra Listens to Miss Blossom in The Ruins of Godys

Every year when an American friend of mine stays with relatives in London early Spring, she pays a visit to a Mrs. Ferber in Dorset Square. They have been acquainted for decades and it has become an annual ritual which she always looks forward to with the greatest of pleasure. The elder and kindly Mrs. Ferber over time has become one of her finest literary mentors, and after they speak about news overseas at tea, they engage in a lively discussion of old and new books that are to be commended and exchanged.

Maeve, for that is the name of my friend, once told me that if it had not been for Mrs. Ferber, she would hardly be able to string a sentence together in English. So out of curiosity, I asked her on her return to New York what was Mrs. Ferber's latest reading suggestion. Maeve smiled and promptly replied: "I Capture The Castle" (1948), by a British author Dodie Smith because it reminded Mrs. Ferber of some early anecdotes Maeve had relayed to her in the past, and most of all, because it is a bright and intelligent delight in itself. Never having heard of it, I naturally asked Maeve for more details as I sensed her enthusiasm, and she is a great one for the books.

"I'll try to give you what is known as an 'ice-breaker', or I'll go off on a rambling essay", she began. 'I Capture The Castle' is a fictional autobiographical diary, and I recognized all the people in the book because they are real, as real as could be. You and I have met them at some point along the way from past experience and roads traveled together. As for the story, two English sisters, Cassandra and Rose Mortmain, are brought up in the 30s by their flamboyant father and young eclectic stepmother, Topaz, in an old Tudor house built among the ruins of a Norman castle that was destroyed during Cromwell's time. The younger sister, Cassandra, now seventeen begins her entry: "I write this sitting in the kitchen sink", and proceeds to call her family 'The Ruined Mortmains'. Her father, a passionate lion of a man and an author, wrote a big splash that was an original and intellectual sensation pre-Joyce's Ulysses and made a fortune with it in America among its readership".

"For a variety of reasons that Cassandra explains at the opening of her journal, the Mortmain Household is now in rack and ruins, hungry and cold, and her irascible and solitary father spends his time holed up in the gatehouse, reading detective novels on loan from the small village library. Rose, her older sister at twenty-one, is a magnificent and fearless beauty, trapped in what she calls a 'crumbling sea of mud'. A realist and born to spread her wings, she finds nothing romantic about their life-style. There is also in this circle a younger brother Thomas, and finally Stephen Colly adopted by the family when his mother died, a native of the village who works hard to keep them all afloat. And then as dark clouds continue to descend on the increasingly impoverished castle, two American brothers, Simon and Neil Cotton, inheritors of the neighboring Estate Manor, show up on the scene".

Here Maeve paused for the longest time. "Well?", I asked her, expecting more of a summary. But what Maeve knew she was not about to reveal, leaving me in literary shadows. After a slight nudge on my part, she finally added with a wry laugh: "In many ways, it reminded me of such true stories at that age, but what if I were to tell you that I have yet to enjoy a novel so similar, and yet different to 'Pride and Prejudice' before? As for the two sisters, Cassandra and Rose in Dodie Smith's narrative, they are able to identify with Jane Austen's novel at once on the arrival of the brothers and inheritors of the near-by Scoatny Hall. There is also a Miss Blossom in this scenario, and she might serve as a helpful reminder to many of us when we listen to her today at a more mature age, reminding us how life at times has a singular way of falling into place. And, here I plan to tell you no more, except that it gave me a great deal to think about".

'I Capture The Castle' has great elements of joy, at times sadness and growing-pains, tenderness, threads of ongoing realities that we are all faced with at a young age, sometimes later, with thoughts on how we wish to live, laced with musings on altruism, religion, romance, fortune, beauty, art and music, psychology, the difference in etiquette and ways between the British and Americans, and more. But, what makes this famous novel rare and unusual is that the young and particularly engaging bright Cassandra knows what it is to be loved and to love, with genuine passion at the conclusion of this satisfying story.

With fond memories of Holly Park today now extant - all a bit of a wonderful fairy tale, while thanking Dodie Smith (1896-1990) for writing so honestly and brilliantly from her own observations, imagination and vantage point about this transitional passage of youth in our lives.

Evocative writing and an interesting story

This is certainly a period piece, set in the 1930's, so while it's somewhat old fashioned in its feel, the writing is some of the most evocative I've read. It's not action packed by any means, and it's entirely first person, but it reads quickly and I found it very enjoyable. I appreciated that some elements if found in another book would have had predictable outcomes, while here they are not entirely predictable yet also manage to avoid the trap of implausible twists.

The story is entirely set in England but it's also got a few American characters. That adds an additional element of interest for American readers with English ties, or vice versa. There is one stretch that's a bit melodramatic (meloromatic?) for my taste, but it's an important element that ultimately works well. If you find yourself struggling to maintain interest through that section just push through and know that it's not interminable.

I find myself reading many more novels by male authors than female, but I found this female voice, both the author's and the protagonist's, to be a refreshing change of pace. I'm not saying this is a 5-star read, but I do think it is very good.

Lovely, original heroine

"I sit writing in the kitchen sink." So starts one of the funniest, most original heroines of the coming of age tale.

Dodie Smith, the author of the charming "101 Dalmatians," published "I Capture the Castle" in 1948. The story is a revelry told by Cassandra Mortmain, a 17-year-old girl living with her family in the English countryside. Her father, once a literary darling, suffers from a 12-year writing block which he treats as a mental enemy hovering over Life--- a writing block that is both an internal and external enemy, consigning them to poverty, threatening the family's existence. Cassandra's older sister Rose is a great beauty with a steely eye on reality, cognizant of her beauty, determined to use it to escape her poverty. They live with their father's second wife, Topaz, a bohemian beauty and an artist's model, who now must serve as the glue that holds the family together. The "Ruined Mortmains" live in a dilapidated house next to a ruined Normal castle, a wondrous metaphor that can represent different things to each character. It is an escape for Cassandra's father, where he goes for "inspiration" but also for brooding and escape. It served as a play space for Cassandra and her sister when they were young. It has a reputation of being haunted. It is also a symbol of the past, both the personal past of the family and the distant, Celtic and druidic past of rural England, which was once magnificent and now broken, untended, forgotten. Only a ghost of the past lingers, and only the living can revive it.

The story's action starts when two American brother move in next door. They call on their English neighbors and are immediately enthralled with Rose's beauty. Cassandra observes everything with her writerly senses, noting not only the style and cut of fabrics signifying wealth and glamor, but also the feelings of eyes, the half smiles, the attention paid, the charisma and the allure of each character. She is the ideal reporter, having the intense feelings and observations of an adolescent, and the articulate, droll observations of a journalist. She has read her Austen AND her Shakespeare--- and has understood them.

Other reviewers have summarized the directions that the story's plot takes, and I will not go into detail. Her father's writer's block is the central obstacle; their impoverishment, like the central conflict of Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" or "Pride and Prejudice," entrap the girls in a socially untenable position: too intelligent to beg, too poor to rebel. The father's irresponsibility underscores the missing maternal figure. One of my favorite characters in the book is the step-mother, Topaz, who is complexly drawn, both a carefree artist (with notions of dancing in the rain, flowing robes etc.) and a caring, listening adult in a largely adolescent world. She has read her Shakespeare too!

My favorite scene of the book is Cassandra's Mayfair celebration, which comes late in the novel. The scene is a quiet one-person celebration of spring, a re-enactment of a druidic rite, an appreciation of the powers of nature (both the arboreal natural world, and human nature prone to love and disappointment), and an illustration of Cassandra's sublimation of her yearning and pain into art. It is the site of a rite of passage, as well. The scene is so tenderly, beautifully done, that it makes me tearful just thinking about it.

Cassandra's intelligence is as beautifully shown in the book as Rose's physical beauty. This "Little Women" echo of competition between sisters is written with honesty. The physical comparisons are not done with jealousy, but are also not without pain. It is central to the conflict of the book, to Cassandra's emotional journey. And it is a fair depiction of every girl as she realizes that she will be judged by physical appearance for the rest of her life. In her charming and gentle way, Dodie Smith has rebuked this notion: Cassandra is the main character of the story, and of our sympathies. She has captured the castle of our imagination.

About the Author

Andrew Burr is a barrister, arbitrator and adjudicator, having been a member of Atkin Chambers since 1983. He specialises primarily in construction and technology matters and is an affiliated foreign lawyer with Varul (Vilnius, Lithuania). Andrew is a listed arbitrator in multiple jurisdictions and recently sat on the ICC’s advisory committee for the revision of its Dispute Board Rules. He is also both the general and articles editor for Construction Law Journal.

The truism that delays waste time and time costs money -- is almost monumentally pertinent to the construction industry which, by its very nature, involves massive expenditure with the requirement of massive capital investment.

Delay and disruption, however, are the two factors that seem to occur in the construction industry more often than they are avoided – hence the pressing need on the part of all practitioners at the Construction Bar for the latest edition of this indispensable text published recently by Informa from Routledge as part of their Construction Practice series.

‘Delay,’ says the expert and erudite author Andrew Burr, ‘happens in all industries ,jurisdictions and cultures,’ adding that when time has not been managed effectively, the consequences can be devastating for all participants in a project large or small, from employers and consultants to contractors and suppliers.

One of the more spectacular examples cited is that of the Scottish Parliament building which incurred prolongations costs of �150 million – a sum which, as Burr points out, ‘could have funded a fully equipped general hospital.’ Other projects like the Shard had their problems too.

Fortunately there are legal processes aimed either at settling the complex legal disputes that almost inevitably result from delays, or preventing such delays from happening in the first place. By way of example in the book’s introduction, the author refers to a protocol published in October 2002 as the result of certain discussions by the Society of Construction Law.

The resulting Delay and Disruption Protocol set out in Appendix 3 emphasizes the need for foresight (if at all possible) in the early stages of a project. The concern here says the author, is with ‘managing time proactively or delaying with extensions time and compensation for delay.’

Rather dismayingly, ‘the industry did not take this message to heart,’ says Burr. Instead, the protocol has been used more frequently ‘as a stick with which to beat the opposition in disputes rather than to avoid disputes in the first place.’

Written with precision and clarity, the book offers a wealth of discussion containing down-to-earth advice as to how problems -- specifically legal problems -- relating to time management can be overcome, or at least dealt with on a rational basis. While no two construction projects are alike, the author asserts that projects failing to be completed on time have two factors in common: poor project programing and poor record keeping, ‘competence in both of which is essential for effective project control.’

It should be emphasised that the book is a team effort with contributions from ten experts including the author. Within its more than 1,200 pages and twenty-five chapters, it covers virtually every conceivable aspect of this complicated subject, from risk, time, costs and project control to global claims, damages and dispute resolution. The chapter points on ‘notices, claims and early warnings’ are particularly interesting. Small wonder, then, that this definitive work has come to be regarded as a leading authority worldwide particularly in court decisions.

Note also, the tables of case report references, cases, legislation contract clauses and the list of other resources. There is in addition a wealth of online resources linked to this new edition, namely the more than one hundred bespoke figures in the text which can all be downloaded.
