Another Worthwhile Read

Another good read. Before reading the book, I was already fairly well acquainted with color management. My monitors were/are calibrated by an by X-rite Colormunki Display. I use Canon printer profiles that match my paper and printer and I use Lightroom 5 to edit and print my pictures. The procedure outlined in the book was one that, for the most part, I followed with one huge omission. Despite know about soft proofing I rarely used it. Sure I would look and see what the output looked like but I did not adjust the proof copy to look my edited original. After reading this short book, I am now adjusting my proof copy and attempting to match it to the original and, as a result of this process, I am happier with the final output. The book is as usual well laid and a quick and easy read. I think the author, Mr. Whalley, has found a good mix between the amount and the complexity of information presented. Overall, a great book for a beginner and maybe a few nuggets for someone with more experience.

Just the right length. Quality over Quantity

I have read four or five of Mr. Whalley's books and find his style or writing well suited to the serious amateur. This is me with emphasis on the "amateur". I have always been overwhelmed at the the perplexities and options presented by various software programs and printer set up menus. Two hours with this book - reading it slowly, cover to cover and now I have a very firm grasp of the numerous elements that go into making a high quality print. Thanks so much for exposing these mysteries in such a straight forward and easy to grasp manner. I have felt the same about each of his books and have bought the only remaining two that I have not read and will end this review so I can get started on them. Next up is the book he has on Nix Sharpener.

The only problem with his writing is that I seem be to able to read them faster than he can produce them. From Lijiang China - Photographers heaven.

Great start to learning to print

This is an amazing little book. I've been struggling with my "semi-pro" printer for several years, rarely getting the print that I saw on my screen or that I wanted. There was no question that it was operator-error, but what to do about it? I bought several printing guides, but quickly got over my head with color management, color profiles, and other jargon that just didn't make sense. Then I found this book. Robin Whalley is able to explain complex printing details in a way that shows me what they are, why they're important, and how they relate. He takes things step by step and then summarizes the steps in a workflow that results in that perfect print. Thank you, Robin.

Wunderschönes Kinderbuch - zeitaktuelles Thema

Ein liebevoll geschriebenes Kinderbuch, es wechseln sich Geschichte und Zeichnungen ab. Es eignet sich ideal zum Vorlesen und Vorzeigen, die Geschichte ist kreativ und gut verständlich für kleine Kinderohren geschrieben. Die Thematik des Buches (Integration und Toleranz) ist sehr wichtig, und wird in diesem Buch kindgerecht und leicht verständlich erzählt. Dieses Buch hilft Kindern zu verstehen, dass es viele verschiedene Menschen und somit auch viele verschiedene Sprachen gibt und das man Verständnis für den Anderen aufbringen soll. Die Kinder lernen, dass es nicht überall auf der Welt gleich ist, aber andere Gebräuche, Sprachen und Hintergründe nichts an der Tatsache ändern, dass wir alle nur Menschen sind. Fazit: Super Sache, ein wunderschönes Kinderbuch zum Vorlesen, verschenken und die Welt ein bisschen besser machen!

Ich war von diesem Kinderbuch begeistert und habe es umgehend an eine Freundin mit Kleinkindern verschenkt, die nun immer daraus vorgelesen bekommen wollen. Die Autorin erzählt wunderbar und für Kinder verständlich wie wichtig Toleranz und Integration heutzutage sind. Der kleine Finley zeigt, dass Kinder voneinander lernen können, ganz gleich aus welchem Land sie kommen oder welche Sprache sie sprechen. Ich kann dieses Buch jeder Familie mit Kleinkindern empfehlen - unterhaltsam von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite.

About the Author
John Ridley is the Malcolm McCallum Chair of Economic Geology at Colorado State University where he has taught ore deposit geology and field geology for the past seven years. His earlier academic positions spanned three other continents, with positions at universities in Australia, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, and over his career he has taught courses in geochemistry, petrology and structural geology. Professor Ridley has published over seventy articles in refereed journals and books, in addition to geological maps and reports for companies and groups within the mining and minerals industries.

Very well executed

A clear and concise up-to-date explanation of ore types and geochemical formation processes. The author carefully organizes and summarizes information without delving too far into poorly-supported alternatives, yet does not fail to mention secondary factors that may play a role. The result is a text full of relevant, organized information, and very little of the tedium that crops up somewhere in most texts. Professor Ridley also eschews informative geochemical diagrams like those showing stability of iron and manganese sulfides, oxides, and carbonates, which might be considered a fault; but these diagrams require a lot of expert interpretation and a grasp of relevance to actual contexts so the author provides the interpretation instead. Even the descriptions and maps of actual deposits around the world appear to have been carefully filtered to best exemplify the processes (rather than simply using the most thoroughly studied locations).

Outstanding text on Ore Formations.

This is a very comprehensive book on ore formations. The sections on hydrothermal processes is exceptional and exhaustive. While well written, to fully gain the knowledge contained, it has to read several times. There is a lot of information presented which takes a bit of effort to absorb. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the genesis and morphology of economic minerals.

A Life-changing way of thinking!

Christians come face-to-face with many situations in their lives. Oral Roberts gives a new perspective on the way we face these situations in this book. I just couldn't put this book down and re-read many statements since I first read it. This was my 'all-time' best book I've read and had a huge influence on personal ways of thinking as well as a Pastor in ministry. What a great way to look at life from a Bible based perspective.

About the Author
Peter Christen is Senior Lecturer at the Research School of Computer Science at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. His research interests are data mining, with a focus on data matching, and privacy-preserving data sharing and mining. He has published over 50 papers in these areas, and he is the principle developer of the `Febrl' (Freely Extensible Biomedical Record Linkage) open source data cleaning, deduplication and record linkage system.

An excellent book on an important topic

I am a statistician working in a hospital. Part of my work involves data matching at a very elementary level, but I am no expert! Still, I can see that this is an important topic. The amount of data collected in health care is huge: the challenge is to match data from different sources rather than collect more data. By matching data from different sources we can gain a more complete picture of how people travel through the health care system. You can imagine the difficulties when my name is recorded as "Terence" here, "Terrance" there, "Terry" somewhere else, and, of course, "Terri" (??). Peter Christen is a computer scientist who is an expert in this field. Furthermore, he writes well. So here we have a book that is well-written, by an expert, on an important topic, published by a major publisher, at a reasonable price. Although the book is probably more advanced than I need, suprisingly, I do not regard it as too technical. There is an extensive list of references. With only about 250 pages, I can read it on the train. For a hardback book it is a good price - many university text books cost much more. "Data Matching" by Peter Christen should be in every university library.

It is difficult to find another soldier’s story to equal Watt’s in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry. In the fight he showed himself to be a military maestro. A bush-lore genius, blessed with uncanny instincts and an unbridled determination to close with the enemy, he had no peers as a combat-tracker (and there was plenty of competition). But the Rhodesian theater was a fluid and volatile one in which he performed in almost every imaginable fighting role; as an airborne shock-trooper leading camp attacks, long range reconnaissance operator, covert urban operator, sniper, saboteur, seek-and-strike expert, and in the final stages as a key figure in mobilizing an allied army in neighboring Mozambique.

After 12 years in the cauldron of war his cause slipped from beneath him, however, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe. When the guns went quiet Watt had won all his battles but lost the war. In this fascinating biography we learn that in his twilight years he is now concerned with saving wildlife on a continent where they are in continued danger, devoting himself to both the fauna and African people he has cared so deeply about.

A Handful of Hard Men is, first and foremost, an account of the actions of Rhodesian SAS throughout the brief life of that republic; Wessels has a talent for bringing the lengthy list of battles and skirmishes to life. However, his account regularly connects the events in southern Africa to the larger context, and the perceptive reader understands that the war was not lost on the battlefield: iIs end was the result of treachery in Washington, D.C. and London, as well as in New York at the United Nations and even within the halls of government in Salisbury, Rhodesia, where (it is alleged) agents of influence played a role in undermining the nation. The account of the SAS ends with a fading away; deprived of the opportunity to assassinate Robert Mugabe before he could assume control of the nation and transform it into the horrific slaughterhouse called Zimbabwe, the brave men of the SAS stood down. They did their duty; the loss of Rhodesia was a tragedy willed by forces beyond their control. Hannes Wessels was born in 1956 in Salisbury and grew up on the Mozambique border. He left school to become a combat soldier and saw lots of action. His book is a paean to the greatest soldier he got to know well, Captain Darrell Watt, of the Rhodesian SAS and Special Forces. Watt won all his battles but eventually, thanks to Lord Carrington and gang, lost the war. For 12 long years in the cauldron of war Captain Watt never lost a battle, exhibiting Spartan-like bravery and better than Spartan-like ingenuity in combating far, far superior forces. The Rhodesian SAS amounted to just an incredible-to-believe 250 men. In the book Wessels recounts harrowing incidents perpetrated by Zanu and Zapu (Mugabe and Nkomo forces) soldiers on black and white civilians, and even on their own recruits... (Taki, Spectator UK)

About the Author
Hannes Wessels was born in 1956 in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) but grew up in Umtali on the Mozambican border. As a boy, holidays were spent with Game Department rangers; time on safari in Mozambique with the late Wally Johnson was a big influence on him. Wessels also grew to know Robert Ruark whose love of Africa, its people, politics and the written word left a lasting impression. He saw action in the Rhodesian bush war before acquiring a law degree which he chose not to use. He has hunted big game in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania in a 20-year career. In 1994 he was severely gored by a wounded buffalo which almost cost him his life. While no longer directly involved in hunting, he is part-owner of a lodge and game ranch in Zambia on the Zambezi and remains keenly interested in all matters relating to African wildlife and conservation. He has published Strange Tales from Africa in the USA, a collection of anecdotes from his hunting days. He is also a syndicated writer for Outdoor Life in the United States and is currently writing a history on the Rhodesian SAS. He is married to Mandy and has two daughters, Hope and Jana, and lives in Darling in the Western Cape of South Africa.

this book was recommended to me and I could not put it down

As an elderly American woman I am not usually into military stories. At the time the SAS was trying to save Rhodesia, I knew nothing about what was going on in Africa. However, this book was recommended to me and I could not put it down. How an accomplished and dedicated group of men could accomplish so much with so little still amazes me. Not only did they have to be watching their backs for military enemies, but often fighting in the African bush they also had to watch their backs, fronts and sides watching for dangerous African wildlife that could kill them. The author did bring up the fact that prior to joining the military Darell Watt had grown up in the bush and was accustomed to wildlife. He is still helping to save wildlife today at Mushingashi Conservancy in Zambia.

The thing that bothered me while reading the book, and still bothers me today, is that the UK and US didn't support the SAS as they should have, and as a result a corrupt dictator Robert Mugabe has been in charge of the country ever since. Had the UK and US been more supportive of the SAS, the entire continent of Africa might have been much better off today without all their corrupt leaders. Those in the SAS who fought so hard for their country are true heroes.

Very interesting reading, brings some little known facts out into the light. Leaves one with a bad taste in the mouth when it comes to politicians in general, and those of perfidious Albion in particular.

A most interesting book for those interested in serious special forces operations. It covers what is now a barely-known 1970s war in which a tiny force of Rhodesian Special Air Service soldiers took on, and trounced, tens of thousands of insurgents trained and armed by the Soviet Union, China and Cuba and supported by virtually the entire Western world. Setting aside any feelings a reader might have about the rights and wrongs of a colonial remnant fighting to retain an unsustainable way of life, this book recounts a military epic. It is also a welcome change from the customary diet of special forces accounts of actions in Vietnam and the Middle East. Well written and structured, it is an excellent read, not to mention being a tour de force of what can be achieved in the face of terrible odds by a tiny number of highly skilled and totally committed soldiers.

As a 2nd year PhD student someone lent me this book so that I could acquaint myself with Social Psychology (which I had very little exposure to beforehand). I felt that I had a better grasp of social psychology after reading this book than I did after taking a year of PhD level courses. Ross & Nisbett effortlessly cover the foundational works of Social Psy in a way that is immediately accessible and compelling. This is one of two books that I recommend to incoming PhD students...

Taking account of the importance of the situation

This book is a wonderful introduction to the importance of situational influences on our inferences and decisions. The coverage of examples is thorough and it is easy to see how each is relevent to the topic at hand. Written in a an imminently understandable and conversational style, this book is a pleasure to read. I particularly enjoyed the ways in which the authors demonstrated the types of faulty logic we all use when trying to use dispositional information to make predictions about the behaviour of ourselves and others. This book points out quite clearly that just because an approach appears to work in the real world, doesn't mean that the rational for using it is reasonable. An enjoyable and informative read!

This is an excellent introduction and review of the field of social psychology, its research and its applications.
